Mike is knowledgable, flexible, and fun to spend time with. We had our two kids with us and he kept them engaged the entire time. During the tour we made a decision to change the original itinerary due to the great discussions we were engaged in, for example most people aren't interested in the German cemetery, but when we asked about seeing it, Mike took us and taught us so much about it.

If you are a Saving Private Ryan fan or Band of Brothers, this is the tour for you. However, our family had other interests as well (eg. the role of the Polish army in the landings) and Mike proved super knowledgable.

Highly recommend!

Our family all agreed that Mike was the best tour guide we’ve had anywhere in the world! Planning and logistics were seamless…he quickly responded to my email inquiry and showed that he understood our needs and recommended the best tour for us. We’re a family of 4 with college aged son and daughter. Son was VERY interested and knowledgeable about DDay and WWII; daughter knew very little other than watching Saving Private Ryan. Mike kept everyone engaged and we all learned so much. We were in a private minivan which allowed us to be more nimble and go places the tour buses cannot. At the end of the day Mike timed it perfectly so that we arrived at the American cemetery in time for the lowering of the flag. So moving…what a beautiful place that really made us proud to be Americans. Bottom line…I highly recommend Mike at Allied Victory Tours!

This tour was great! Mike was an excellent host providing a great experience for my in-laws, wife, son (11), and me. He tailored the visit for us and included personal investment into my father-in-law's father's experience w/ the 2nd Armored Division at Omaha.

Book your tour with Allied Victory Tours - you will enjoy it!

There are tour guides and then there is Mike. From setting the tone and having a flexible agenda for our kids, Mike was great to work with. The history of Normandy is amazing and Mike goes in a layer deeper making it so we can visualize being at some of the sites back in the day. You cant expect kids to absorb everything in one day yet Mike was patient and helped out when needed to explain things in a context the kids would understand. We took some great pictures, had a nice lunch and really got to appreciate how the world was hinging on a few precious moments back on D-Day.

We took an early train in from Paris, and Mike van den Dobblesteen met us at the Bayeux train station and took us for a quick coffee to get the trip started. Then we started in the village of Angovile-au-Plain where we learned the amazing story of two American 101st Airborne medics, Bob Wright and Ken Moore, the angels of mercy who turned the a small Catholic church into a medical aide center on D-Day and treated both wounded American and Germans troops.

Then we proceeded to Saint Mere Eglise, Utah Beach, the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery.

Mike was the consummate guide and host. It was like being with an old friend who might as well be a PhD professor in all things related to Operation Overlord. Not only was Mike one of the most knowledgable people you'll ever meet on D-Day, but he frames the stories about the heroic actions of the Allied troops in a way that grips your attention and makes you want to learn even more.

Hearing the stories and details of people such as Col. James Rudder, who led the charge of Rangers to scale the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc and to capture German guns and fight off the enemy for more than two days until reinforcements arrived was riveting. It was an honor to be there and see the dagger memorial where President Reagan also stood during his 1984 speech there when he honored these heroes.

Walking on the sacred ground of Omaha Beach and seeing the challenge our troops had fighting Germans holed up in machine gun nests was also particularly poignant. It's hard to express the feelings and gratitude we had into words.

Further, it was also a privilege to visit the American Cemetery, where 9,388 heroes are buried. It's one of the most beautiful settings you'll ever visit with the cross and Star of David gravesites and a beautiful reflecting pond, memorial and chapel — and the English Channel in the background. We were honored to be there when they lowered the flags in the late afternoon and played Taps. We felt proud and patriotic.

As an aside, Mike took us to a wonderful boulangerie for lunch and drove us around in a clean, comfortable and spacious van. We couldn't have asked for more. The entire day and tour was first rate and is highly recommended.

My wife and I had a fanstastic day in Normandy, thanks to Mike and his amazing Full Day Tour of the American D-Day sites. What made the tour truly special was Mike’s military history background and his passion for the subject of the D-Day landings and the subsequent battles. My wife, a traumna nurse by trade, is by no means a history buff. However, Mike won her over at our first stop on the tour. After hearing the story of how two airborne medics saved the lives of dozens of American and German soliders at the Angonville Au Plain church, she was hooked for the rest of the day. Mike picked us up from the Bayeux train station following an easy train ride from Paris. After a quick coffee, we were off to the sights of the American landings as described on his website. The day flew by and it was Mike’s stories of the experiences of indivual soldiers and the battles of their small units that made the beaches and bunkers come alive. As others have noted, he timed our arrival at the Ameriacn Cemetery so that we could experience the lowering of the American flag accompanied by the playing of Taps – a very moving and appropriate way to end our tour. Mike dropped us off back at Bayeux that evening and gave us a recommendation for a wonderful restaurant. We were able to enjoy a traditional Normandy dinner before catching our train back to Paris. The day ended up being a highlight of our trip to France. If you’re looking for a private tour of the D-Day beaches and battlefields, Mike is the guide you want. My wife and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Mike is phenomenal. We couldn't have asked for a better tour or better day. The four of us (two seniors couuples) learned more than we could have imagined about D-Day, the battles, the key players, the ups and downs and everything else. Not only is he a fountain of information, he is also a great host and he paced the day just right for us.

By the way, he is also a lot of fun. After he dropped us off at our hotel doorstep we all hit the internet to start looking up the soldiers he discussed and the incidents he mentioned. Basically, it is the most informative and fun history lesson any of us have ever had.

Do yourself a favor and have Mike guide you to and through this hallowed ground.

Mike met us at our B&B in Bayeaux with a very comfortable van and started with “How nerdy do you want to get because I can get really history nerdy!” And “I have a plan but is there anything you specifically want to see?” I wanted to see the Women of Valor WWII Museum. Coincidentally, it was his wife’s museum. What are the chances of that?? Our day was nerdy enough but yet entertaining with interesting side stories. I expected a rather depressing day but Mike and his stories of truly heroic acts made it an inspirational day. We covered a lot of ground with Mike while he gave us plenty of time to wander. We spent probably an hour at the Women of Valor museum which was well worth the trip. Our day ended at 5:00 at the Normandy American Cemetery in time to witness the lowering of the flags while Taps was being played. Ending to a perfect day! This is a trip that every American should take. It was the highlight of our 2 week trip.
Mike spoke clearly and loud enough that we could hear very well in the back seat. I would definitely book with Mike again.
