I was collected from my hotel by Hector at 08.30, and we picked up our English-speaking bird-guide, Camilo, on the way. The journey to the Hummingbird Observatory took about an hour as it is in the mountains south of Bogota. Camilo brought sandwiches for lunch and we left about 2pm returning to the hotel at about 4pm.
The tour was well organised and run. Communications by email during the booking process were answered promptly and clearly. Camilo is a very knowledgable birder and all-round naturalist. Hector negotiated the busy roads around Bogota very skillfully and safely.
If you are even slightly 'into' birds, then I would recommend a visit to the Hummingbird Observatory - a beautiful garden with lots of hummingbirds of several different species. You get close-up views and it is all very relaxed. Photography is permitted, but not the use of flash. With the right camera gear it is possible to get some good shots of the hummingbirds. My one regret, I didn't get an opportunity to say thank you and goodbye to the lovely owner, but overall an excellent experience.
I would definitely travel with Andesecotours again, and, based on my experience, I have no hesitation in recommending them to others.

The observatory is small but nice and has many different hummingbirds. The birds are free but attacted by some water and sugar mixture to be sure that the visitors will be able to see them. Unfortunately we did not see any other birds, unlike what was marked on the page. Therefore the visit lasted two hours. The guide was very helpful and tried to find other birds but there were none.
Keep in mind that the price varies according to the number of people you will bring, so the price on the webpage is the minimum price when visiting with several friends.

First we went for a short walk in the countryside just above the location of the feeders. Then we returned to the feeders and spent several hours observing the hummers. We saw a good variety of them, and the guide was very helpful with their identification, obviously possessing considerable expertise. She was also very pleasant to be with.

We went on the half-day tour to the Hummingbird Observatory with Chantelle and thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived a little early at the Observatory so Chantelle took us on a birding walk along the track which was extremely productive. Chantelle is extremely pleasant, English speaking (originally from S.Africa, I think) and really knows her birds. This walk turned out to be a real bonus although you will not be disappointed with the Observatory. We have been to similar hummingbird viewing locations but this was the best. Really well laid-out and somehow the birds here really catch the sunlight to show them off at their best. Saw 12 different species included Sword-billed and both Blue & Black-tailed Trainbearers (extremely long-tailed).
Chantelle arranged for a reasonably priced taxi to take us back to our hotel after having had one of the best mornings of our Colombia holiday.

Four of us did a 3 days, 2 nights trip starting and ending at Bogota, organised by Andes Eco- tours. It was fantastic! Our English -speaking guides were Andres and Celine, both of whom were knowledgeable, well-organised, and good company. We began with a visit to a hummingbird observatory, which was a lovely peaceful place with a fascinating range of birds. Mainly we spent time walking in the cloud forest and paramo of Chingaza National Park, and the Coachi area too. We learnt a lot about the flora of the area, and did walks with stunning views ( helped by great weather). The first night was spent on a park lodge ( dormitory room to ourselves), and the second in the home of a local farmers family involved in community projects, where we were made very welcome and served delicious food. The whole experience was really excellent. We were impressed by the beautiful mountains so near to Bogota, and by the varied trip organised by Andes Eco-Tours. It's well worth spending as long as you can on a trip. Highly recommended.

We spent two great days of birdwatching with Chantelle. One was at a hummingbird observatory in the Andes east of Bogota at an elevation of over 10,000 feet, the other at a shade grown coffee plantation in a forest reserve west on Bogota in the Magdalana Valley at about 5000 feet. Both were fantastic days of birding, with different birds each day. We saw 10 species of HB the first day and 3 the next along with many stunningly beautiful tropical birds in both habitats. Both days offered terrific opportunities for photography with active feeding stations. Chantelle is a great field birder who grew up in Houston, and is a really fun person who can share her knowledge of the people of Colombia as well as the birds. We highly recommend Andes Eco Tours for anyone with the least interest in experiencing the birds and the beautiful countryside around Bogota.

I just loved my visit to the Hummingbird Observatory with Andes Ecotours. I don't know of any place near Bogotá where you can get as close to so many different species of hummingbird as you can here. We saw 12 different species and took some amazing photographs. I came away with so much new knowledge too. I'm an eager newcomer to birdwatching, and I am confident that after this visit I could now identify 5 or 6 different species of hummingbird without difficulty. This is all thanks to Chantelle's expertise which she imparted throughout the visit. She patiently reminded us of the names of the different species as they darted to and fro, explained how to tell the difference between the males and females, and allowed us to use her binoculars to get a closer look. The observatory is a great model for local ecotourism. Where hummingbirds have been threatened by deforestation in this area, the observatory now provides them with a haven where food is plentiful. A wonderful experience, and I can't wait to go back!

Thanks for joining us on the tour! Your phone pics taken through the binoculars were impressive. I've suggested it to a few people since then. We look forward to having you back with us soon!

My wife and I recently returned from a two-week photography/birding tour in Colombia with Andes EcoTours and it truly was a trip of a lifetime. We visited botanical gardens, the hummingbird observatory, the Eastern Andes mountains, the Chicaque rain forest, the Coffee Lands and the Llanos region. During the two weeks, we saw an incredible number of birds, animals, flowers and striking landscapes. Our driver, Hector, was a pro at both driving and spotting birds. We can't speak highly enough of Chantelle, our guide. She was very knowledgeable, well spoken, flexible and was always thinking of our needs. As an example, every night she would upload a summary of the sightings for the day, which we found very useful. She also has an amazing eye for spotting birds and animals. She was the reason I was able to get so many great photos. In terms of accommodations, they were generally very good, although you can expect some rustic accommodations in the more remote areas. Food was very good and there was plenty of it. All in all, a fantastic trip and we would return to Colombia in a minute.

My very unstructured trip to Bogata Colombia was greatly enhanced by taking 3 tours with Andes Ecotours - two of which were private tours that were put together for me at the last minute. I went on these 3 tours: Hummingbird Observatory (private), Urban Birding (private) and a coffee tour (group). I had a wonderful time on all three outings. Knowing my interest in birds, Chantelle was a great guide while on the coffee tour. I learned a lot about life in Colombia, the coffee trade in Colombia as well as seeing some fantastic birds. As I had two private tours, I was greatly impressed with their willingness to work with my schedule.
Andes Ecotours is committed to providing eco-friendly experience for their customers and a sustainable business opportunities for the local people. I highly recommend contacting them when going to Colombia.

what time is this tour? sounds very interesting we have several hummingbirds in Arizona but I imagine yours are much more colorful
The Hummingbird Observatory is about a 1 hour drive out of Bogata - I was staying out by the airport. Can't remember the opening time, but you would probably want to book with a guide/agency like I did, and they will arrange access. Lots of hummingbirds when I was there, of several different species, so it's good to go with a guide who knows his/her stuff. There is no food there (I think you can get a coke) so, again, good to go with a guide who has brought lunch. The company I used - Andesecotours - were good. I booked over the net from the UK and Andesecotours did everything that they said they would, so I can recommend them.
