Richard toured us (4 seniors: 3 men, 1 woman) on an 18 day road trip of Ecuador (S, E, N, W). Richard is experienced, knowledgeable, well connected, organized, conscientious, thoughtful & intelligent. He strived to provide accommodation, food & bird watching/photography venues to suit each of us. He’s also an excellent driver. Richard organized separate boat cruise tours for me to the Galapagos & Amazon Rain forest, including all travel & accommodation within the excursions, and it all came off without a hitch! I was extremely well taken care of, and felt safe throughout the month of travel, thanks to Richard. I highly recommend Richard Hernandez for any travel within Ecuador.

Richard exceeded all of our expectations. He has connections at various birding reserves which made it feel like we had VIP passes to see the best birds. He was friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. Richard's main goal was to help us see as many birds as we could and he succeeded. We saw toucans, tanagers, creepers, woodpeckers, hummingbirds (so many hummingbirds!), cuckoos, and quetzals, just to name a few. Overall, we saw over 75 species of birds. It was an experience of a lifetime and the highlight of our trip to Ecuador.

Richard is a professional, thoughtful and very knowledgeable man. He has a lot of experience doing this. First off, he will ask what you want to see and put together a suitable itinerary. He speaks excellent English. I saw all the birds I wanted and more. Travelling alone it was a bit expensive to hire him for the day, but I have no regrets. I can recommend this experience - Richard will help you get the most out of your day around Mindo.

Richard guided us for two days on an incredible journey through Ecuador. Day one was a natural tour to the Mindo cloud forest to find birds. He knows the best birding spots and we listed 30 different species! Afterward, we visited the butterfly garden and the chocolate factory. Along the way he kept us entertained with his knowledge, wit, and humor.
Day two consisted of a cultural tour driving through historic Quito, neighborhoods, and indigenous areas. We stopped at Otavalo for some fun bargain shopping at the market. Once again along the way, Richard shared his extensive knowledge and pride for his country. He took us to a beautiful 400 year old hacienda for lunch Where we also strolled through it’s beautiful gardens. What a great day.
Four people in our group, we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Richard is a great listener and able to recognize the cues that enable him to personalize everyone’s experience.
We had the most joyful guided tour ever! Thank you, Richard.

If you only do one thing while visiting Quito, it should be birding with Richard. It will change your life.
My partner and I did a 3-day customized birding tour with Richard in the Mindo Cloud Forest and at Antisana. When we reached out to him, we asked for one thing: to see as many birds as possible. In those 3 days, we saw over 120 species of birds we’d never seen before coming from the United States, many of which are endemic to Ecuador, all thanks to Richard!
Richard was receptive to our needs and desires in the initial planning process, crafting what seemed like the perfect itinerary and cutting out anything we didn’t love. We originally requested to go to the Mindo Cloud Forest for one day, but after speaking to him about all the exciting birding possibilities, we added on two more days for the tour, and he made it happen. While on our tour, as weather conditions shifted and time elapsed, he was flexible and offered up alternatives to the existing plan as needed to help us see as many new, spectacular birds as possible. He also gave us many opportunities for taking photos of birds, as I enjoy bird photography. We couldn’t have asked for a better itinerary!
We came in to this experience as novice birders with the desire to improve our skills and knowledge, and Richard was incredibly helpful in that regard. He gave us pointers and tips constantly while still encouraging our curiosity and answering our questions tirelessly.
We were blown away not only by the amazing wildlife, but also by Richard’s incredible expertise and deep knowledge of the birds of Ecuador. He knew about the behavior and biology of most of the species we encountered and told us all he knew about them with each sighting. He was also engaging and curious to learn more about us as people and our own journeys as birders, which meant that there was never a dull moment, even while navigating between birding spots.
In the first two days in the Mindo Cloud Forest, we visited many different birding locations, including feeder balconies, hummingbird feeders, leks (breeding display grounds) for the Andean Cock of the Rock and Long-Wattled Umbrellabird, and several hikes around the forest. We saw all kinds of birds including toucans and toucanets, 20+ species of hummingbirds, tanagers of every color, cotingas, flycatchers, cuckoos, woodpeckers, raptors, and so many more! We also took a night walk to hear and see frogs, insects, and an owl among other nocturnal creatures of the Cloud Forest.
On the third day, we visited Antisana (the fourth highest mountain/volcano in Ecuador) to see additional hummingbirds, raptors, Flowerpiercers, Ibises, Antpittas, water birds, and the incredible Andean Condors! We finished out our beautiful day at Antisana with thrilling horseback riding through the mountains with the snow-capped peak of Antisana in the background.
All along our tour, we ate delicious food at local restaurants, hiked with some of Richard’s excellent birder friends, took many beautiful bird pictures, stopped along the road anytime we saw a cool new bird, and had great conversation. It was an amazing time in every way, and we would do it all again with Richard if we could!
Richard was also instrumental in helping us coordinate the remainder of our trip to the Galapagos after our time in Quito, for which he connected us with a guide he knew in the Galapagos. He also helped us coordinate COVID testing in Quito to ensure that our travels went smoothly. Richard did a good job keeping us COVID safe throughout our three days together, always driving with windows open and wearing masks whenever in close quarters indoors.
If you love birds or even if you don’t love birds, birding with Richard is an experience of a lifetime!! Thank you, Richard, for making our time in the Mindo Cloud Forest and Antisana so incredibly special!
