Outstanding trip. We went on the final trip of the season and it did not disappoint! We saw at least 8+ whales! The crew was amazing and especially the main guide who was so knowledgeable not only about humpback whales in general, she knew the names of them and follows their migration throughout the year, and knows all the ‘mamas’ children! This was one of the best tours I’ve had. Granted, we were told we had a good day, and disclaimer, it’s not sea world and the crew can’t predict sightings, however, they do know where to look!

We booked an afternoon cruise after calling the office to determine which of our two days on Brier Island would offer better sailing conditions. Fortunately, we took their advice because sailings were cancelled for the following day due to rough seas.
Everything about our experience was excellent, including the up-close whale encounters. We saw several Humpback whales in close proximity to the boat (which was smaller than the whale watching boats on similar cruises we have taken in Maine and Cape Cod), including one breaching the water right next to the boat! We also saw whales slamming their pectoral fins against the water and diving into the water, exposing their tails.
The boat was very clean and well-maintained, including the bathroom (head).

Never imagined that we would get so close to the whales! The weather was perfect, the crew was great - very knowledgable (esepecially Amy) and very enthusiastic. The boat was clean and comfortable. While we did not get see to any of the whales breach, the up close and personal experience we had with them was incredible, any closer and we could have reached out and touched them. I think they were watching us as much as we were watching them. Highly reccommend!

We had a fantastic time. The most important thing is that we saw whales. At one point they were right next to the boat. Amy, Bethany and Clayton were amazing tour guides. They were friendly and knowledgeable. I would have had a great time anyway but Amy made the experience even better.

I have wanted to go whale watching for some time now. After some research I found Mariner Cruises to have great ratings. We booked our time for 12:30 on Saturday September 17, 2022. The weather was beautiful, the staff so knowledgeable and friendly and the whales put on wonderful show. It was breathtaking and amazing and I could not have asked for more.

From the reception at the office, directions to the doc and the abundance of information provided by the entire crew of Mariner Whale and Seabird Cruises, you are not going to be bored, and prepare to learn and be wowed! The entire crew of Chad and Sisters Two are incredibly knowledgeable of all local wildlife, weather systems, ecosystem and so much more. Any and all questions from guests are answered thoroughly and with delight. The cruise itself is incredible, ample viewing space and “look outs” all over the vessel to watch for any whale/seal/dolphin or bird action. 10/10 definitely going again. I might add, this was a stop on out honeymoon, amazing.

My husband treated me to this holiday as a birthday gift while in Nova Scotia for the summer, and for years to come, we can both enjoy the memory of it! (Only as a guide to help others trying to decide, I'm 77 and have bad knees, etc, but the boat was smooth and other passengers were helpful in allowing me space to take pictures. There was that understanding that we were all there for the same reason, and it made a nice comradery!) Carpe Diem!

When is the best time of year for whale watching?

I would say that August is the best month for whale watching out on the Bay of Fundy. However, we have also gone out in late July and early September, and we have seen whales on every single outing. This year was our seventh trip off Brier Island, and our sixth with Mariner Cruises!

We are excited to take this tour this coming July. As it will be a busy time of year, we are wondering when we should book it?

There are 3 whale watching trips out a day - morning - noon - afternoon. Any of those better? More chance of seeing activity?

I like going at the noon sailing. We always find we are pretty exhausted after so we can relax, have supper and tour around briar a little in the evening. We've always traveled down (we are 4 hours away) in the early morning, done the noon sailing and stayed that night. The 4 trips we've done have been extremely successful for seeing lots of whales

Does this tour go rain or shine?

This company is very careful about planning ahead for weather. Our tour was to take place on a Friday but, when the forecast indicated rain and possibly thunder, we were contacted in plenty of time and offered an alternative for the day prior.

How do I get there? I'm looking at map and I see no roads to this?

From Digby, you need to count with 1.5 hours to get to Brier Island as you will get 2 Ferries to get there. You just follow the street down the Digby Neck. We were there a 23feet Mobile Home without any problem.

How long does tour last? What is the cost? Is the ocean rough? Possibility of sea sickness

Our tour lasted 3.5 hours. It was $49 per adult. The water was a bit choppy but only 1 person got queasy. If you are prone to seasickness I'd suggest bonnine or Dramamine and you'll be fine. It's such an amazing tour!

What is the best time of year to see the whales? We are planning a trip east and want to make sure we have the best time to see the whales.
Thanks Donna

I went in September 18th. We saw upwards of 30 Humpbacks in the space of three hours.
Unfortunately there is no guarantee. The boat owners were extremely professional but they are not magicians. I've been before in Newfoundland and saw one the first time and none the second.

I am considering coming to Nova Scotia around the 10th October. I would like to do a whale watching cruise but do not have a car. I will either fly into Halifax or come on the ferry to Yarmouth. Do you run tours from either of these destinations and if so, what is the likelihood of seeing whales at this time of the year. Also, I can get sea sick...is it likely to be rough?
