This was an excursion on a Viking river cruise. After a short bus ride from Passau we took a walking tour of Schärding. This is a very nice little town. Afterwards we were on the bus to take the boat ride. After a long wait, in the sun to board the boat, we were off. We were told that they had another group before us so they had to clean up and get the boat ready for us. We chose a table. On the table was a pretzel tree with a wooden box with 5 beers. Each was different. The server told us to try them all and then let her know which beer(s) we wanted. I especially liked the radler, beer and lemonade. It tasted very fresh on a hot afternoon. Afterwards the sever walked around with shots of schnaps. I had a few! Overall a very pleasant boat ride.

After a tour in the town of Schärding We took the bus to this tour boat to take a cruise on the Inn river. It’s a nice cruise and they give you a pretzel and a beer. Nice views from the boat with Bavaria Germany on one side and Austria on the other side.

Nice view of a monastery and the pretty town of Scharding on a quaint river boat. Pretzels and beer and a countryside peaceful river cruise on the oddly colored Inn River Bring your passport as the cruise begins in Germany and ends in Austria!.

After a morning in Passau, we drove upriver through the Bavarian countryside, arriving at the quaint little Austrian town of Schärding on the Inn River. With a local guide, we admired the gracefully curved gabled roofs of multihued pastel houses facing the picturesque baroque central square. After another short ride we arrived at the tiny town of Neuhaus am Inn where we boarded a recreated salt barge and set sail on the emerald green waters of the Inn River. Refreshed with a beer and pretzel, we had time to take pictures and just relax. The barge is a re-creation of what was used to haul salt in the medieval times, very shallow, flat bottomed. We ended at a walking bridge that connected Germany and Austria. On the way back to Passau and our Viking Longship, we enjoyed beer and a pretzel, and the views of the passing countryside with German Bavaria on one side and Upper Austria on the other.

This was one of our optional tours with Viking and it was one of our favorites. You start at the tiny town of Neuhaus am Inn where you board a recreated salt barge and sail on the emerald green waters of the Inn River. You start with a beer and pretzel, then have lots of time to take wonderful photos or just relax. The barge is like what was used to haul salt in the medieval times, very shallow, flat bottomed, with a lower level with windows and an upper level with a roof. We ended at a walking bridge that connected Germany and Austria, built after the EU was created.
We would definitely recommend this and would go again
