Apparently from the times when the French came up the Mekong River into China, nice traditional church. We came here on a tour and stayed over Christmas Eve for evening mass and witnessed amazing cultural dances, fireworks and mixed with the locals. Unique experience that we will always remember. Also a great place to take pictures.

Had trouble trying to find the church. Entry into the village which was over a bridge across the Lancang River was really inconspicuous and nondescript. The road leading down to the bridge from the state highway is muddy and single lane. Had to wait quite a while for the many trucks and vehicles to come up before we could descend in our vehicle. The only road in the village was being reconstructed and given the construction of a new and better bridge together with new development in the village, it is not an easy place to get to.
When we finally found the church, it was worth it. The bell tower is opened for visitors to climb all the way to the top for viewing the vineyard and surrounding mountains. The interior of the church is quaint and old but properly maintained.
Ended the visit by sampling the red wine made by villagers using the grapes grown in the church vineyard.

This small historic church in a once-tranquil village is a victim of its own fame. Now the place is inundated with Chinese tourists who arrive in 4WDs and spend half an hour taking photos and sampling some of the locally made wine, before departing again. The church is now crowded out by ugly 3-storey guesthouses and other large buildings. Also, the whole village of Cizhong (not Zizhong) is to be greatly expanded and resettled with 'outsiders' in the next two years as the hydro dam is completed and the lower valley is flooded, forcing many Buddhist Tibetans to relocate to this mostly Catholic village. That is also why a huge new concrete bridge is being built over the Lancang (Mekong) at Cizhong to replace the existing low-lying bridge that will be swamped.

We were staying in the Songtsam Lodge in the village and took the opportunity to visit the church in the evening for a service. We are not Catholics but a fellow traveller told us that while the service loosely followed a mass, part of it was in Tibetan and part in Chinese. The Tibetan part was more like the chanting of mantras and was most beautiful.
We intended to stay for a few minutes but stayed for almost all of the service.

Unless you have your own car, you will have to hire one, then drive the hour or so from Deqin to the church. It's an interesting building, but there's not much to it. Photos are not permitted inside.
If you decide to go - do try to call ahead to make sure it's open. I had a bit of a scare when I first got there as the priest was not around.

Strange to find a catholic church in the middle of rural China. Visited on Christmas day and the locals were having a 24 hour party, they were kind, generous and lots of fun.

The church is simply a wonder in terms of it being there and it's history creating a very special addition to a beautiful village which probably nears the true Shangrila image.... The new road and bridge take a bit away but without them access would be difficult i guess it's the cost of development and the people should have their fair share too....

Is the highway between Bingzhongluo and Cizhong open? How long (KM) and time (hour) does it take to travel?
Is it open in the winter (Dec & Jan)?

From KMG to Deqin, the drive is about 4 hours. From Deqin to Cizhong, it is another 2 hours. These roads are not expressways but Mountain roads. In winter, sections of the road might be closed if snowfall is heavy. The church is open all year round.
