A memorable hike that most people could do
oct. de 2021
I'm giving this a 5 because the hike is not overly-long or extremely strenuous. It was, for us, the signature hike we did while visiting Shenandoah NP.

The trailhead for this hike is on Skyline Drive itself. The lot appeared to fill up early. You can avoid this by parking at the Big Meadows Visitors' Center lot and doing an additional ~ 1/2-mlie or less hike from there to the trailhead on a separate trail. So if the lot is full, don't give up! You could also hike from lodging at Big Meadows, but it would be at least a mile from there to the VC, so it would become roughly a 3-mile (one-way) hike.

From the trailhead, you begin descending almost immediately. Most of the trail is a gentle downhill slope, with occasional steps or slightly steeper inclines. Once you reach the top of the falls, the remainder of the trails (basically a large switchback to get to the base) is steeper, but not too bad. The trail is rocky; if you have hiking poles, they will help.

We went in the latter half of October and the Fall foliage was a great bonus during the hike.

At the base of the falls, I think the total distance is just under 1.5 miles. We saw people of all ages and fitness levels doing this hike, so it should be within most peoples' ability-range. The return hike (uphill) is definitely more strenuous than the descent.

The earlier you go, the more of the crowd you'll likely avoid. Throughout our hike, the crowd on the trail steadily increased (we started around 9:30 a.m., I think).

If you are visiting Shenandoah, I would highly recommend this hike.

Continue after the falls for the prettiest hike
oct. de 2021
The prettiest, most relaxing hike in Shenandoah. Dark Hollow Falls, the falls itself, is easy to access using the Rose River Fire Road from the Fisher's Gap Overlook parking lot. Or you can challenge yourself a bit and take the hike from the Dark Hollow Falls parking. Both lead to the falls, which is picturesque. But the best part comes after. Continue on the hike on the Rose River Loop, toward Rose River Falls. The trail, sometimes wet from water seeping down the hillside, sloops down gently and has some minor unsure footing. But the payoff is in the view. You walk alongside the river the entire trail, at least until shortly after Rose River Falls (or you can turn around at the bridge before the falls). The river is a series of small rapids and eddying currents,k beautiful to see and hear. Plenty of rocks offer a spot to take off your shoes and cool your feet. The entire trail is shaded so you can take it in the heat of a summer day.

Busy, steep trail, challenging return.
oct. de 2021
Busy trail with a parking lot that fills up. The description of this trail lists it as easy but with a very challenging return uphill.
Believe it. It is steep and there’s a lot of loose rocks.
It’s a good hike though and you’ll meet lots of people.
Take your time and bring water.

The falls are nice but my big takeaway from the hike is this:
Wear appropriate footwear for this trail!!
For any really. But I was amazed and dismayed at the footwear I saw.
A woman was starting down the trail in heels!!!
I tried to communicate to her in my broken Spanish that it was going to be dangerous. Her husband said thanks and they kept going.
Others had sandals, or slip ons and I did wonder if they made it down and back up.
Walking sticks to help.

Just did the hike today.. no crowds, well maintained trail with an incredible waterfall . Take a lunch and sit on the rocks looking at the falls while u picnic. In our 69s and had no problem with the trail, but I do recommend walking sticks .

Not the Hard Trail Down
sep. de 2021
We took the Rose River Fire Road Trail down. Not that bad. The killer part of the day began when we headed out from there to see the Rose River Falls.

Dark Hollow is a tough, but great hike

This hike is beautiful and interesting. However it’s very steep. Bring extra water and wear shoes that have been broken in.

Cook hike

We are not hikers by any means there were some spots to watch out for as it was uneven ground and hills. The falls were nice but much water was flowing when we were there.

Steep rocky hike

Very steep hike with rocks. It’s very dry so not much water at the falls. We’ve done many AT hikes and felt this was difficult.

Beautiful waterfall
jul. de 2021
Even though, the waterfall was not as large as at other times of the year, it was still very beautiful. On the way down, we saw a few deer. It is a crowded hike so we moved over several times to let others pass. The hike back up is steep and took us about 10 minutes longer to get back up then it did to get to the falls. Not an easy hike for smaller children.

Best waterfall hike in the park
jul. de 2021 • Familia
We did Dark Hollow, Rose River, Lewis Falls, and Whiteoak Canyon. Dark Hollow is the best one. The path is steep in places. Wear good shoes, not sandals. Water and a snack are also good to bring along. If you've got the time, do the whole trail. Many people stopped at the first waterfall and then went back to the parking area. All three cascades are lovely. The walk back is uphill but if you take your time, it's doable.
