Local handmade items supporting women & children

Luckily, I found Project Esperanza Art Shop on TA.
No one I asked had ever heard of it but I did leave word at our hotel for them to recommend this little shop to their guests.
I emailed directly to find out the exact location and their hours and I was promptly responded to by Caitlin, who came in to open the shop just for me & my family.
She was warm and welcoming and had her beautiful children in tow, so I tried to shop as quickly as possible - and I am good at that.
We spent under an hour and under $200 US dollars & walked out with original art work, sea glass, tshirts & very special hand-made sock dolls & more.
It is a very tiny shop & well worth a look if you are in town - though we made a special trip just to get there.

I bought all my souvenirs here! All the art in the art shop is made by local Haitian and Dominican artists from the bateys in and around Munoz. There were gorgeous paintings, bracelets, baskets, carvings, bead workings and textiles all SUPER reasonably priced. When you walk in the door, you can't help but notice some jaw-dropping statistics on the wall about the areas where the artists live - 78% of homes lack sanitation, 57% drink the non-potable tap water, average weekly income is just over 40 US dollars, etc. The prices were comparable to those found in the tacky tourist shops on the beach, but the products in the art shop were of MUCH higher quality and came with the certainty that they were locally made (definitely not from China) AND support a great cause!!! Project Esperanza is an amazing organization that aims to aid the impoverished Haitian youth in the area through "education and empowerment." Plus, the neighborhood of Munoz is just a few minutes away from the city of Puerto Plata and popular Playa Dorada - a lot of buggy and horseback tours pass right by the shop! Money well spent. We plan to return on our next vacation!
