Monday 28th October we visited Isla Mujeres by ferry from Cancun.
We spotted this bust statue while exploring and sightseeing along streets of the northern section of the Island.
It is located in a paved recess, on the pavement, at the intersection of Avenida Juarez and Aldolfo Lopez Mateos.
It is a tribute to Andrés Eligio Quintana Roo, the State of Quintana Roo has been named in his honour.
Quintana Roo was born on the 30th November 1787 in Mérida, Mexico and died on the 15th April 1851 in Mexico City aged sixty-three.
The bronze coloured bust statue depicits Quintana Roo wearing his medals of office.
It stands on a white stone plinth, on the front of the plinth is a plaque with an inscription about him.
During his life he was a lawyer, author, liberal politician and theorist, he was one of the most influential men in the Mexican War of Independence.
As a member of the Congress of Chilpancingo, he presided over the drafting of the Mexican Declaration of Independence in 1813. He was also a member of the Mexican Supreme Court.
He was married to Leona Vicario a fellow independence activist.
