Best place to get photos of Squamish and see some natural areas near town. Say a few seals floating around the estuary looking for salmon. Also saw some salmon showing in the river that were on the large range. The road is very bumpy and not maintained well towards the last half so low clearance vehicles are at risk of hitting random rocks.

We stopped here trying to find some otters since this area seemed to bed a place they hangout. We didn't have any luck finding otters but we saw many different birds including hawks and bald eagles. There was also a trail system that isn't that easy to find but once you do it is worth checking it out.

Arrived here the weekend that the KB4C event was going on in Hood River. Wanted to skip the crowds. Did not know they charge 20 dollars a day to kite the spit. Great flatwater kite spot, no waves so don't bring a surf board. Water is cold, advise you take a 4/3 wet suit with booties. In my opinion if I am going to suit up for cold water kiting there better be waves :) Decent launch spot, they have honeybuckets for bathrooms which were pseudo clean. They have a pump on site for inflating your kites.

Looking at a map, we were not expecting to find anything at all at the end of the Squamish Spit after enduring some km of dusty, washboard road. Emerging from the forested area we were greeted by stunning views of the surrounding mountains, sun-dappled water and beautiful vistas of marshy land surrounding both sides of the spit, and exciting displays of kiteboarding tricks. Super windy, with friendly people enjoying this piece of paradise.

The spit is a great place to watch the kite boarders in action. On a windy day you can see 50 or more colourful kites racing around near the spit. This is one of the top summer kiting destinations, so you may see some of the top kiteboarders in the world showing off their impressive tricks. It's significantly cooler at the end of the spit so you may need a jacket even on a warm day. The road to the spit is rough and dusty. If it's busy you can drive to the end of the cars to drop off passengers, but then you have to drive back to the end of the line to park. There are outhouses, but no other facilities of any kind. The only attraction is the kiteboarding. It is rare to get to see so many at once, so that is the reason to go there. There are bleachers to sit on, or you walk down to the very end for a better look. At low tide you can walk on the sandbar after scrambling over big rocks. You can get lessons from operators who have buses or trailers set up at the end of the parking lot. Sometimes you can get a lesson right there and then. Wetsuits are provided and the lessons go from boats. For a more civilized experience (changerooms and a real bathroom and leaving from a boat launch) you can also get lessons from Aerial Kiteboarding - which has headquarters in town near the boat launch. The views of Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains are beautiful from here.

We are still fascinated by the kite-boarders that are always present here, the strong wind and the view... Shannon Falls, mountains and Sea all mixed together with a view of the Estuary.
The kids loved picking drift wood and playing on the beach while we appreciate the jumps and the views. You can just relax or even bring your lunch for an improvised picnic. Some people are biking here but I think it is a bad idea. The trail is narrow and the cars make it seems like a very dusty experience for the bikers.
