Enjoyed the drive from Dovedale to Tissington, it was what I had seen in books and pictures- amazingly beautiful, visited the church, wishing well, and had cream tea at the lovely place right across the church.

Easy walking Tissington to Thorpe. Clean toilets (though only one operating). Refreshments at Tissington. Very friendly people en route. Lots of tables for picnic.

Autumn day out on Trail Althorpe to Hartington. Disappointed to find section above Alsorp car park deeply rutted by rain channels. Most uncomfortable despite wide tyres. Also disappointing as area of great views but too busy concentrating on path ahead to appreciate the wonderful scenery.
Been like this for a year or more ..---come on Peak National Park or whoever is responsible you should do better than a rutted bike track which is also quite dangerous in places. Is it going to take an accident to get it improved??

Such helpful staff at the Ashbourne Cycle Hire who helped me out when my road bike brake cable snapped at the start of a groups day out on the Tissington Trail. Quick rental arranged and it was fully repaired on my return later in the day although they were extremely busy that day. So thank you. Having used one of their rental mountain bikes I would certainly recommend the use of these instead of a road bike as its much safer and enjoyable.

Hired bikes at Parsley Hay and cycled down to High Peak Junction and back. There are two very steep inclines and another which is not so steep so we walked those but the rest of the trail is flat and very easy to cycle. Lots of great views along the way, plus abandoned quarry workings and works associated with the old railway, and we loved watching the cows using the tunnel under a large embankment!

Tissington Trail

Cycled the Tissington Trail from Parsley Hay to Ashbourne & back for a distance of nearly 28 miles.

As well documented, the trail runs predominantly downhill in this direction. The gradient is more downhill after Tissington station to Ashbourne.

I really enjoyed this trail & so far out of the Peak bike trails I’ve done so far (Monsal, Manifold & Derwent Reservoirs) I’d rate it a close second to the Monsal Trail though I’ve still to do the High Peak Trail.

The views are great from this trail & there are less trees obscuring those views unlike the Monsal.

The downsides are the trail path isn’t as wide as the Monsal so be courteous & the trail is more exposed to any wind due to less trees. I did it on a calm September day with weather around 20 degrees & sunny - perfect!

The surface is gravelled & on one or two stretches there is evidence of water erosion causing ruts on the path surface. So, it’s probably best tackled on an MTB with off-road tyres, though I managed it on a hybrid bike with slicks!

Don’t forget your bike lights for the Ashbourne Tunnel ;)

An elderly friend was knocked over by a cyclist, severely injured, taken down to an ambulance and spent the night in Derby hospital. Cuts, bruises, stitches, severe head wound and concussed. So much for putting cyclists in conflict with pedestrians. Reaction by staff when reporting "there are signs requesting cyclists to slow down". No concern whatsoever including police when reporting. Same situation on canal towpaths with a lot of confrontation between pedestrians and cyclists.

This review is only aimed at the expensive High Peak Junction Car Park - we really do not recommend parking here to cycle as it costs £4.80 for more than 3 hours while the hill out is terribly steep and gravelly. We soon realised why not a single other person was cycling up or down the two hills leading to Middle Top. We had to push bikes up this hill first (admittedly there are fabulous views from the top) and then another one before arriving at Middleton Top. On the way back we knew we couldn't cycle down these hills (and indeed the advice is not to do so) so returned (after Middle Top) via roads through Cromford; these are also dangerously steep and very unpleasant with traffic. It's a much better idea (as clearly most people knew) to park at Middleton Top or one of the many free car parks along the way. The cafe by the canal at the car park was reasonable but the smell from the sewage works rather off putting.

The best bit about the trail was the tea and date slice at the Parsley Hay Cafe next to the bike shop.
A real life saver on a wet & windy cycling day.
The smile on the face of the young lady serving us was a sight to behold !!

Thanks to the lovely man at Middleton Top for his help choosing our hire bikes. A beautiful traffic free ride to Minninglow (where there is a snack shack on a campsite).
