Lovely museum excellent guide who sang sings from whaling history and her school days. Interesting to learn about whaling , not for everyone I imagine but they are responsible in they have quotas and don’t always catch any whales in one year

A very passionate presentation where I learned a lot. Very glad to get a better historical understanding of how the island developed in the past.
Certainly worth a visit to this museum

I enjoyed my visit to the Bequia Heritage Museum. The museum has two buildings. One is devoted to boats and includes the Bequia whaleboat Dart, built in the late 1950s and in use from 1958 through 1989. The other building has archaeological exhibits, such as these Amerindian pottery sherds, dating from AD400-700. I was fascinated by a PowerPoint presentation on the island's history. I learned that James Hamilton, Alexander's father, came to live on Bequia from St. Kitts. This is not a big museum, but t certainly was interesting to visit.

The usual docent wasn't there when we went, but we had the very helpful Suni as our guide instead. The part of the museum with historic maps and a plethora of pieces of pottery, large and small, was not her area of expertise, but the ppt explained things that she couldn't. However, the second part of the museum, which focused on the history of whaling in Bequia, was definitely her strong point. She is related to the most famous whaler in Bequia history, and she sang us a calypso about him. She also sang the Bequia whaling song. She was amazingly knowledgeable about the history of whaling as well as all of the artifacts there. The museum is located above Friendship Bay from which you can see the tiny island that is the focus of whaling. The view from the museum is wonderful. This is definitely worth a visit.

The museum is small but plan on spending at least an hour and a half there. One of the trustees works as the docent and she is packed full of information. She is delightful to listen to , she knows the history of the island very well. She encourages questions, has a sense of humor. Well worth the visit.

Wow! An amazing insight into the history of Bequia from the early Colombindian adventurers coming across by canoe and bringing their carved pottery, to the later periods of French and then Brtish colonisation, the rise and fall of Sugar plantations and then the evolving development of Bequia as an important centre for repair and construction of wooden sailing vessels and their tradition of whaling. Nicola brings it all to life with an informative and impassioned presentation. Then you can go across and see the actual wooden whaling boats constructed and used on Bequia. If you are really lucky Suni (?) may sing one of the traditional whaling songs. Only open Monday, Wednesday Friday, Allow time to get the full experience

Just one hour spent here brings Bequia to life ..!
A beautifully presented tiny Museum illustrating the history & culture of this fascinating island .
We learnt about the people of Bequia from the ancient settlers arriving by canoe, &saw their decorated pottery discovered recently after a hurricane. Also the Boat building & restoration industry, sugar, whaling & now tourism .
There are display cases, maps , a video , and the curator brought it all to life with her knowledge and passion.
Well worth a visit !

We did the short walk from the Bequia Beach Hotel along the beach before 9am returning along the road. Great way to see the fauna and flora. The venue was closed that day but it was still great to experience. The building structure is lovely and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda enjoying the view, the shade and watching the tortoise’s grazing. You can see into the museum with ease and we found what we got from that interesting.

The knowledge of Bequia’s rich history and the passion for conserving and sharing it by the team really made our visit very special. Every question was answered in a extremely informative way which added to the experience. Suni’s wonderful local songs also brought the history to life that she shared. Would strongly recommend a visit for anyone with an interest in Bequia’s history.
