We were really surprised by the number of birds considering the time of year. Probably to a local fairly common birds, but coming from UK it was very interesting ( kookaburra, bee eaters, black shouldered kite, darters and many more)
As a footnote, we foolishly underestimated the distance back in 40’ heat. A really big thank you to the lady in the wildlife centre who helped my wife when she was starting to feel unwell - she couldn’t have been more helpful

Herdsman Lake is a regional park with many waterbirds, plus native vegetation. The lake tends to dry out in summer. There are several small artificial lakes in the area. The shared path encircles Herdsman Lake, it's suitable for walkers and cyclists.. It's a good place for a picnic. Churchlands Senior High School is adjacent to the Lake.

We have come here several times in these weeks for walking and bird watching. The best areas for birdwatching are those in the north-west and south of the lake in fact the path in the east is too close to John Sanders Dr. There are various parking lots around the lake and walking in these areas of the park is very pleasant. We parked in the parking lot at the far north of the lake on John Sanders Dr. and walked along the west side of the lake to the Herdsman Lake settler’s Cottage. We also visited the southernmost part of the lake in the area where it is located the Herdsman Lake Discovery Center (currently closed). The very interesting Olive Seymour Walk was partially open for refurbishment of the wooden boardwalk, but it is now completely closed. This lake is an important bird breeding habitat with over 100 species of birds recorded during the summer, but birdwatching offers considerable opportunities even during the period in which migratory birds are not present. Swans, herons, egrets, ducks, pelicans are present in large numbers while it is not difficult to see the osprey. On the trails there are numerous signs indicating the risk of snakes and we have seen a small tiger snake crossing the path in front of us. To know it is that walking, cycling and bird watching are popular activities in the park especially on beautiful days and weekends.

Wonderful walk, with lots of variety.
The walk takes at least an hour, but would allow 2-3 hrs to include stops along the way, to take in the beautiful scenery & wildlife.
Lots of places to park, depending on where you decide to start the walk.
If you are in need of a coffee/drinks stop there are a couple of choices on Herdsman parade just set back from walk near the Wildlife Centre.
Take a picnic and enjoy!

The walk around the lake is very pleasant. I enjoyed the parts which were far away from the road. Some of the way the pathway is too close to quite a large road. There are so many birds around. The views of the city are more unusual as you are viewing it from the back.

you can walk around the whole 7 kms just over an hour. So much wildlife to be seen in this stunning lake. CAUTION!! November to march is snake time Herdsman has a massive Tiger snake population you see them daily crossing the foot paths. pls keep your dog close to you on a lead, they are highly venomous and if they or you are bitten there is a high chance you could die if not treated.

Perth Australia Am I In the city or at a nature reserve ?? 🤔🤔🤔
Just 30 minutes from Scarbs, I started this most unusual hike. I walked clockwise around the reserve ( my opinion was the best way to do it ). On my right was the beautiful and serene reserve and on my left was the busy of a main road which eventually gave way to upmarket suburbia. The paper bark trees and lake are jaw dropping. It’s really a great walk that took me 3h30 to do the 11 km hike🌟🌟🌟
The enjoyment one feels when fellow hikers nod their heads and give you a warm greeting made this a remarkable experience for me ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Riding around the lake you do have to ride next to the road at some point but this is worth the effort. Most of the riding path is wide enough to ride safely and enjoy being near to wildlife and away from traffic.
Also recommend this as a place to go with family for a lovely, nature walk.
Plenty of places to stop and relax. Take a flask of a warm drink during the winter and relax, soaking up the beauty of nature so near to the CBD of Perth.

Not the easiest of places to get to, but magnificent nonetheless. A huge nature reserve in the middle of Perth. Great for bird watching, and even has shelters set up to do so.

Easy bus ride out from CBD. Full walk is around 8km, but a lot of this while adjacent to water also runs close to road. Suitable for a cooler day, as no water stops (or cafes!). A couple of bird hides enroute did give good views, but often it was just a pleasant park walk. The short boardwalk close to start/Centre is the best option, with close views of a variety of birds and wonderful trees. Cannot comment on Centre as the day we visited there was a school visit, with signs up saying during these school visits the Centre (and presumably toilets) are not open to public. Cafes are a short walk back about 10 minutes passed the bus stop.
