The Iao Vallery is a lush, green rainforest in the west Maui mountains about 3 mi in from Kahalui. This area receives 300 in of rainfall a year. The steep, forested hillsides are green with several streams cascading down the slopes. The "Iao Needle" is a geologic, volcanic feature formation that protrudes from the jungly greenery. It is a dike created when surrounding ridges eroded away and the harder rock remained as a spire. A gorgeous paved pathway leads to a set of 135 stairs up to a viewpoint for the Iao Needle, a culturally significant ceremonial site. Definitely recommend a short trip and stay to this site.

After you arrive proceed on the trail and make sure you get to the top for a spectacular view. After coming down that the trail down to the river level and have a look around.

This is a breathtaking experience. Tucked between two mountain ranges, it is sheer beautiful. About an hour and a half to two hour walk. It's not a hard hike, and again, it's so beautiful. You could do this the morning you head to the airport to leave the Garden Isle. A lot of history here.

This is a wonderful location, but be forewarned: the main scenic viewpoint of the Iao Needle is a 3-minute walk up a staircase, and EVERYONE who summitted during our visit immediately started complaining about how disappointed they were to have just paid a lot of money ($10 per car plus another $5 per visitor) for a 3-minute experience. What you need to do is take the time to explore the trails and head down to the river for a true outdoor experience. The Needle is just what draws people here, but there is a great multi-hour experience to be had here if you are interested in hiking around! It's also VERY accessible for children, and this is why we chose it: we wanted to give our young kids a flavor for Maui's natural wonders beyond the beach!

Tucked in between the West Maui mountains to the West ..and the Haleakala mountains to the East.. is this gorgeous lush valley so rich in growth due to it being the second wettest place on earth!
Go prepared with a rain jacket and enjoy your sheer untouched beauty of the plants, trees, rivers… and the mountains !
The IAO Needle is spectacular!
Take on all the small trails .. it’s a beautiful amazing place!

Beautiful scenery. Make sure you bring a jacket, was really windy and make sure you wear tennis shoes. This is a must see! Then go eat at 808 Main for lunch or dinner.

Great views but bring your money to park your car and there is a per person fee too. The park is a very short visit unless you venture on to the river trails that are not marked at all well. The best trails are no longer open but they don't tell you that until you have already paid $10 to park and $5 per person. There is an attendant to make sure you pay too. The rain is constant so make sure to bring rain gear. There are numerous areas when hiking along the river to swim and enjoy the beauty. The trails after the paved ones are muddy and treacherous at times. Great photo opportunities abound though.

Definitely worth a stop. We climbed all 133 or so steps to the top viewing area. Entry and parking fees were $30 for four of us. No cash, credit card only. It is free to Hawaii residents. There are portable restrooms near the parking lot. It is a scenic, pretty and historic area. Visit when you are in Wailuku. We stopped after eating lunch at the Mill House. Masks are required here. Be sure to have it ready.

Extremely short hike! The scenery is gorgeous and the river was running pretty high when we visited but the whole time lasted about 10 minutes. Total. We were able to find a small trail that went along the river for about .5 miles but if we didn't come across that then we would have been in and out in 15 minutes.

What mode of transportation is available from the cruise port?

I am sure there are tours from the cruise ship to Iao. If not then you would need to either rent a car or take a taxi. Not aware of any public transport bus that goes into Iao Valley.
