We used Wow Ethiopia Tours in April of 2019. Shimelis Fentie was easy to communicate with, listened to all our needs and concerns about our trip, and was responsive in his communication and developing our itinerary. He arranged for all of our in country needs: he booked our in country flights (negotiated with the gate agent when there was an issue with our baggage allowance), booked our lodging (including finding a suitable guest house in a very remote area), found restaurants that met our needs, arranged for cultural experiences and great natural sight viewing. (Shimelis' knowledge of wild life and birds was incredible) He also arranged for an additional translator when we were in SNNPR and needed someone to translate in the local language.

We were met at Bole Airport by Shimelis and taken to our hotel in a beautiful new van. When we travelled throughout the south our driver met us at Jinka airport and drove us for our tour of the south in a land rover which was perfect for the difficult roads.

Wow Ethiopia Tours is very professional and also completely flexible, willing and able to tailor the perfect experience for each traveler. I highly recommend Wow Ethiopia Tours.

My wife and son and I toured with Shimels Fentie and WOW Ethiopia Tours for 14 days in Ethiopia.
Shimels and his staff provided us with a wonderful experience that we will never forget.
My wife and I adopted our son from Ethiopia nine years ago. His biological mother, whom he had spent four years with, is still alive. But we had no idea where she was and she does not live in a region where you can just look somebody up on People Finder.
I contacted Shimels and sent him the woman’s name and a photo of her, and told him in general which area of the country we thought she lived in. Shimels told me he would find her within two weeks. He did. He did this free of charge.
We scheduled a trip with WOW Ethiopia tours which was arranged and guided by Shimels. He also provided a driver and a Toyota Land Cruiser, and all five of us traveled together.
Shimels set up a 14 day trip through the Southern Nation Nationalities Peoples Region of Ethiopia that was incredibly diverse and fascinating. We visited the Sidama area where our son’s family lives, and stayed in a very comfortable house at a lodge where we could view hyenas and monkeys were occasional visitors. The food at the lodge was very good and served family style for all of the guests.
During our four days visiting my son’s family in their village, Shimels also organized and executed a project for us to build a house for my son’s mother and brother. This sounds incredibly expensive in American terms, but in that region of Ethiopia, it costs less to build a 3 room house than it does to buy a beater used car for a teenager in the U.S. The skills Shimels showed in organizing and executing this project were amazing. He arranged the purchasing and transportation of the building materials, labor, contracts for some of the building that would take place after we left, and more. The house was about 70% finished when we left after four days. Shimels also followed up after we left and made sure the project was completed. He has since sent us photos of the family in their new house.
In the next ten days we visited a variety of peoples and environments. Many were traditional villages and some were quite remote. The people were always friendly, and they are somewhat accustomed to tourists and the tours that come through their villages. Most of these tours are small parties of people.
We visited the Dorze, whose huts are made of bamboo and are known for their woven cotton cloth.
We saw very beautiful scenery, mountain and river valley panoramas, agricultural and livestock regions, the Arbore people with their livestock herds, and the women adorned with their handmade jewelry. We visited the Karo tribe, a very small tribe, that is distinguished by their elaborate face and body painting. The Karo women scar their chest as a beauty ornamentation, and the Karo men scar their chest to denote the kills of an animal or an enemy.
We visited the Hamar people and attended a Bull Jumping ceremony, which is the trial a young man must go through to win his bride. He has to run naked across the backs of whatever number of bulls the bride’s parents choose to assign him. The Hamar are also masters of body and hair ornamentation and scarification.
We visited several large outdoor markets which had many arts and crafts for sale and also one in which a livestock auction was going on.
We visited the Mursi tribe where the women are known for the large clay plates that they bear in their lower lips and ears. Some of these are so large you won’t believe it.
The visit to the Konso people featured their terraced agriculture and the villages situated high in the hills and surrounded by stone walls.
The trip also featured a great deal of wonderful food and drink and an ample opportunity to sample them. Also visits to lakes and stays at lodges on some of the lakes. We went on a wildlife viewing trip on one of the lakes and saw hippos, crocodiles, a tremendous number of different bird species, and a variety of fish because we visited fishermen who were out on the lake and they showed us some huge fish.
I found Shimels Fentie to be a very fine gentleman who is trustworthy and kind, and has a very high level of personal integrity, both personally and in his business dealings. He has provided us news of our “Ethiopian family” since we have left the country, and has assisted us in communicating with them.
Shimels was a wealth of information about the entire country, but also about many of the customs of the individual tribes and areas we visited. He knows some of all the tribal languages, it seems, and his English is excellent.
I heartily recommend WOW Ethiopia tours, and the tours that they provide.

I cannot recommend Wow Ethiopia Tours highly enough. Whether you are an adoptive family, a tourist, a bird-watcher, Shimels and his staff will create a personal and unforgettable experience for you.

We adopted our daughter from Ethiopia in 2007, always with the intention that we would make Ethiopian culture a part of our own and that we would find a way to connect with her family in the SNNPR.

Shimels was able to help us make contact with our family, and we traveled to meet them this past spring. Shimels worked diligently to make sure every minute of our travel was enjoyable, even in the most remote areas of the country. Shimels had every detail of our trip arranged when we arrived in country. He was attentive to our needs, whether it was touring, shopping, eating or resting. If a minor problem did happen to arise, he worked quickly to fix it. Not only did we visit family, we toured Addis Ababa and Arba Minch, and visited Maze and Nechisar National Parks. He was a wealth of information about wildlife, culture and history in every area we visited. We felt safe and comfortable the entire time we were with Shimels, as if we were being cared for by a member of our own family.

Because of Shimel’s hard work and preparation with our family in the SNNPR, we had an unforgettable stay with them, and have already made plans to return in the year 2020 and every few years thereafter. When we do, we will only consider using Shimels as our guide. We have many friends in the US who have adopted children from Ethiopia and we have given them Shimels’s contact information because we trust him to take care of them as he has taken care of us. We're convinced that he is the most hard-working, personable, knowledgable and caring guide in Ethiopia. He has our highest recommendation. - Rob and Elizabeth Glynn
