The founder of modern China, Dr. Sun Yat Sen has been in Hong Kong for many years to develop his strategies and planning for a modern China. The museum gives a great insight into his career, private life, and the countless efforts he has worked out for the modernization of China. There are plenty of exhibits of him, full of many documents and photographs. Beside the building wherein the museum is located in one of the early mansions built, located in the early days of British rule and owned by a well-established and famous Chinese family. Highly recommended to visit, to go back in time. The entrance is free. Great to plan for a rainy or hot summer day in Hong Kong. Recommended.

This small, free museum is located inside the historic Kom Tong Hall and provides a very good history of Sun Yat Sen as a revolutionary and the father of modern China. He is regarded as the founder of the modern Republic of China, overthrowing the Qing dynasty and serving as the first Provisional President (1911-1912).
Information throughout is excellent and is in both English and Chinese. Simple, clear explanations are coherently structured and provide a good historical background, tracing the events of Sun Yat Sen’s political life and activities.
I found the collection fascinating but some may find it a little dry and it’s not child friendly. Most of the exhibition consists of documents and B&W photographs although there are a few artefacts, including a traditional brown gown that he wore as a student and his dark Western wool suit. A life-size model of Sun Yat Sen sitting at the end of the top floor was startlingly realistic and models of him with his fellow revolutionaries, who were known as ‘The Four Desperados’, also helps to bring an otherwise colourless exhibition to life.
The other interesting feature here is Kom Tong Hall itself. Built in 1914 as the opulent residence of the the wealthy businessman and community leader, Ho Kom Tong (1866-1950), it remained the family home until 1960. You can still see original features including Art Nouveau leadlight windows and the richly dark wooden staircase that runs from the basement to the top floor. A short video on the building’s history was very interesting. On the ground floor, you can walk through the White Hall, a French styled parlour and don’t miss stepping outside onto the grandly curved front balcony.
Disappointingly you cannot take any photos inside the exhibition although photos of the architecture, stairs, courtyard, hallways and White Hall are allowed.
NOTE – It is closed on Thursdays.

중화 문화권 곳곳에 있는 쑨원 기념관
근대 홍콩 저택의 느낌을 잘 살려서 층층마다 전시를 구성하고 관리도 잘 되어 있어 한번 쯤 들를만 합니다.

The museum's location is a little out of the way. We walked about 20minutes from Central MTR. The slopes and stairs along were a great exercise. Luckily we went in the morning. I suggest taking a taxi instead. The museum is free to enter. The building itself was a church previously and it was carefully restored to its former glory when it was turned into the museum. The exhibits were carefully laid out. Quite informative of the time of Dr Sun in Hong Kong.

The Dr. Sun Yat Sen Museum (free entry) is located on Castle Road at the top of the steep Aberdeen Street. The museum is housed in the restored Kom Tong Hall, a four-storey Declared Monument. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Thursday)
Architecturally, this is a nice building to view. It was constructed in 1914 and is Neo-classical with red brick walls. The interior offers hints of Baroque and Rococo which you will see throughout. Do enjoy the grand staircase. It is particularly impressive.
The museum includes three floors of exhibition space detailing the life of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who spent much time here Hong Kong. You will learn about his early life and introduction to politics, his revolution against the Qing Dynasty and founding of the Republic of China. For this, Dr. Sun Yet Sen goes down in history as the Father of the Republic of China.
The exhibition includes artefacts, audiovisual programming and general information. It feels rather detailed at times but you can go through galleries at your own pace. As such, this is a place you could spend half an hour if you've limited time or perhaps a couple of hours if you are particularly interested in this historically important figure in this region of the world.
Note: There is a statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen in the courtyard outside the Kom Tung Hall mansion. It is worth a quick look-see before or after visiting the museum.

Before our visit to Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum we knew very little about this man and his achievements, by the time we left the museum we had learned something about him, local and national history and stories of this beautiful mansion and of the massive restoration.
Dr Sun Yat Sen was a great Chinese revolutionary, to honour the work of this great man the Chinese Government purchased this magnificant building and underwent a massive restoration, returning it to its former glory with all the beautiful architectual details of the century it was built in. On our self-guided tour of the mansion we had access to many rooms over several levels of the building, no photographs of the exhibits are allowed. Not all of the exhibits and information boards have English descriptions but there was enough for us to enjoy, observe and read during our visit. The video on the restoration of the building was enlightening and allowed us to appreciate the features of the building better.
The historical building is known as Kom Tong Hall and it is located in the Mid Levels of Central. The streets in Mid Level reminded me of San Francisco, along the way I spotted signs that we were walking along the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Historical Trail, a trail we did not have time to walk.
The museum has varying opening hours but essentially is open most days from 10-6 closed on Thursday. If you enjoy history and architecture then treat yourself to at least an hour visit at Dr Sun Yat Sen Museum and all for free.
