I had an amazing time at Yanapuma Spanish school! I took classes for one week and I learned a lot! Apart from the Spanish I also learned about Ecuador and its culture. Many many thanks to my amazing Spanisch teacher Sofia!

I spent a week in Cuenca and had the opportunity to spend a total of ten hours studying Spanish. The school was
very well organized with capable teachers and a convivial atmosphere. I was given one-on-one and one-on-two
classes by Maria who I understand manages the school in Cuenca. She was an exemplary teacher: a very patient
and capable communicator with a strong intuitive sense of how language is learned and retained. If you want a
memorable and productive learning experience in Cuenca, the Yanapuma Spanish School is the place for you.

Our family studied at Yanapuma in Cuenca for two weeks. We highly recommend it!
My wife and I had group lessons (in separate groups due to our respective abilities), and our boys (10+12) shared private lessons. All 4 of us have had some Spanish in the past, though different amounts.
The boys’ lessons were full of games and other age-appropriate activities. It was a very interactive class - no boring textbooks here. The teacher was excellent. She was friendly, well-prepared, and patient with our sometimes-reluctant boys.
The group lessons are small: 2-4 people plus an instructor. The instructors in these groups were also excellent. The instruction is focused on conversation rather than rote memorization (though there is certainly instruction in grammar and vocabulary). This approach was a huge help to train both my ear and my tongue. After 2 weeks of instruction I feel much more confident (though I am a long way from fluent!). My instructor spoke and taught very clearly, adapted her instruction to the group’s needs, and most importantly was very patient with all of our mistakes and mispronunciations.
The school’s focus on conversational Spanish allows for in-depth discussions of Ecuadorian culture. We learned a ton about the culture, people, economy, and history of Cuenca and of Ecuador. The school includes weekly cooking classes and (simple) homework requiring shopping in markets. These also helped us understand the culture at more than a superficial level.
The experience far exceeded my expectations!

My children (12&10 y.o.) and I studied at Yanapuma for 6 weeks (3hr/day). The kids were in a semi-private lesson with Alexandra and they loved it! Her lessons were engaging and centered around games and crafts. Not only did the children enjoy her class, they really enjoyed Alexandra! Each Wednesday there was a “degustacion” where everyone in the school would bring in a typical Ecuadorian fruit/vegetable/snack and we would taste and discuss them as a group. These events were conducted completely in Spanish and I was amazed to see the confidence and abilities of my children to engage in this activity over the course of their studies. Thank you Alexandra!!
The first four weeks I was in a group lesson with Patricia. The group size fluctuated week after week from 2 to 5 to 4 to 3. I felt like I got the most of out of the lesson when there were 3 or fewer in the class. The class was structured so that the first hour or so was spent in conversation – this was helpful because Patricia would direct the conversation to practice the skills that we learned the day before (reflexive, preterite, etc.). I was given a notebook to take notes, but no other books or materials were provided. Occasionally, we were given worksheets or stories to read, but I felt like a book or an outline of the lessons would have been helpful and make the lessons more meaningful. When we decided to extend our time at Yanapuma, it was very important to the children that they stay with Alexandra as an instructor and her availability changed from morning to afternoon. For that reason, I switched from Patricia’s class to a private lesson with Carina for the last two weeks we were there. Because this was a private lesson, most of the time we were engaged in conversation. Carina was a good mentor who corrected my blunders with kindness and when a weakness was apparent, we spent some time on more formal grammar lessons. Thank you Patricia and Carina!

I had an awesome time at Yanapuma. I loved to study there. The school is really a peaceful oasis in the busy historic center, a great place to just hang out when the sun shines in in the late afternoon. The whole staff is friendly, patient and helpful. I hope to get back someday.

My month in Quito volunteering with Yanapuma was the best experience. I took Spanish classes too while I was volunteering and although it was a bit hard at the start due to my limited Spanish, after a week I was already much more confident. The kids were great to work with and I felt really useful working with them on various tasks during the day guided by the patient staff. I really recommend Yanapuma for volunteering in Ecuador as the volunteer coordinator was always checking on my progress and ready to offer any help necessary. Quito is awesome too!

We will be spending a month in Cuenca, and based on these very positive reviews, I tried to set up private lessons for us but was frustrated by poor communications from them and have now made arrangements elsewhere. The first time I used their Contact Us email, there was no response at all. I twice spoke to them on the telephone but neither call led to a concrete plan. They have an English-speaking (British) representative who deals with us gringos. He seems to be based in Quito and seems to have little knowledge of what goes on in Cuenca. Anyway, after a number of emails that got me nowhere, I gave up. Perhaps their teachers are great, but their communications are poor.

After replying to the initial inquiry the morning after receiving it (I have the copy in my outbox), 4 more emails and two telephone conversations within a 7-day period, this reviewer titles his review "Poor Communication"!
We never received a registration form, which is the essential next step. I did delay on replying to the last email (forgot to mark it as unread, but picked it up at the end of the month) about potential timing of the class, but had assumed that at that point from all we had discussed that everything was set - mea culpa! I believe 99% of potential students would just have sent a quick reminder that they needed that information before registering rather than giving a dismal review! Oh well . . .

We are a couple travelling in South America for 6 months. We have learned some Spanish on the road and took a week of classes at Yanapuma in Cuenca to improve. We communicated in advance that our main objective was to improve our conversational Spanish and that is exactly what we got. For 1 week we took private lessons with Sol, who is a great teacher and a wonderful person. She taught us some basic grammar which will help us improve. Mainly we just talked a lot, and we really feel it is becoming easier for us to speak Spanish. Additionally we joined a free cooking class where we learned how to cook some traditional food, had a great lunch and got to speak Spanish with the other students and teachers for 2 more hours. We would recommend Yanapuma to anyone, we had a great time and got exactly what we wanted.

Hi, your review says that you stayed 10 min. away. How did you find a place to stay? We are going in Jan. and will probably enroll at this school based on all the reviews. Thanks for your help, Elisa

Hi Elisa, The school offers homestays with local host families or can recommend and reserve hotels or hostels close by depending on your budget. You can also look on airbnb. We have one in Quito close to the school. You can email us to get the link as we cannot post it here.
