If you've come this far, you will visit this museum. Heart-breaking for the topic it addresses, and heart-breaking for its shallow resources for telling the story. After all, 300+ years of slave trade from this location would seem to yield more details and information, but alas, this is Africa. Diminishing this location's self-proclaimed importance is neighboring Benin's and Ghana's declarations of the same thing: Slave export capital of West Africa. Far better is Zanzibar's Slave Auction Museum in Tanzania.

The renovated Heritage museum has brought back the beauty of this structure that was built in 1863 by the colonial government and commissioned as a museum by Lagos state government in 2003.
It houses edifice of trans Atlantic slave trade and some Badagry history.
It is ideal for everyone.

I was glad about the reconstruction work so far. I love the 2 magnificently huge sculptures that now decorate the front of the museum you guys should go see it. I want to suggest that the Lagos State Government support the other little museums in that area as well such as the Seriki Williams Abbas Museum and the Mobee palace museum.

i have been to museums in other countries so being a Nigerian, I am quite critical of what I saw here. This is a major museum meant to preserve the history of the dark era of the slave trade, Badagry being a major trade route!! You find here in the two hot and stuffy unlit rooms some chains and pictures of the slave era ( the pictures are those easily available on google). The tour guides are knowledgeable but one can also read up online!! Don't expect much!! You may meet loads of children in school buses on school trips to location!! They have said, it is under renovation! Let's hope in future that this place will really be improved!!

This museum is a weak point in heritage sites in Badagry. Needs more attention. Some interesting exhibits, but very few artifacts. Some of the building structure is falling apart. Even took a while to get building opened when we visited.

This was one of the most enlightening adventures I have ever been on. There is a sadness that dwells in this place but also a reminder of how far we have come. I am honored to have been in such a historical place to hear the stories of my ancestors and stand where they once stood.

A long way to go for so little when it is such a fascinating part of the country's history. The museum is tiny and only a handful of artefacts
