We really enjoyed our time at this museum! They have a wonderful video giving the fascinating history of this old Norwegian settlement in the Territory of Alaska and we were amazed to read the story and see the exhibit of the 126.5 pound WORLD RECORD King Salmon that was caught in a fish wheel nearby in 1939...

This is a small museum and well worth a visit. Had a great display of the largest silver caught in Alaska.

Don't Miss the Photo Books!

In 1942, the Coast Guard photographed every resident of Petersburg. Flipping through the books, you get a very different picture of "Little Norway" because half of the people are Phillipino, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish..... it was a diverse place. If you have any questions, the curator is super helpful.

We visited this museum early in the morning. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The exhibits were well displayed and signage was good. It is a very small museum but tells of the region quite well.

Great Small-Town Museum
ago. de 2017 • Pareja
We were amazed at the quality of the artifacts and exhibits at this little museum. There's a large piece of furniture labeled Discover Center. There are doors on it to open and drawers to pull out. Opening or pulling out reveals a treasure trove of displays and artifacts. One drawer that particularly fascinated my wife contained genuine animal skins, such as the hide, with "face," of a wolf. Lots to see and photograph and just excellent all around. There are several large art pieces outside the museum as well that are quite interesting and in keeping with the town and environment. There's a display of historic cannery labels that I found interesting.

Stopped here and learned a lot after leaving. The video you can watch which is about 15 minutes is a great overview of the history of the town. Nice gift shop.

Many Interesting Old Items & Sea Relics Here
may. de 2017 • Amigos
This museum have lots of old interesting items. We paid our own donation to enter, but was told later that if we were on a cruise, that Cruise Line would have paid our entrance fee we just needed to register that information when we entered. Good Info for others to know who might be visiting this area. Was worth visiting this place for sure.

Nice small town museum

Our family went to this museum when it had free admission during the Little Norway Festival. We enjoyed the permanent exhibits and the art displayed during the festival. The highlight for the kids was the drawers full of wildlife items that could be touched.

Quaint museum, worth a visit
jul. de 2016 • Pareja
Visited the Clausen Museum for about an hour, while relaxing in Petersburg before catching a noon flight. $5 was worth it; had nice balance of historic, Native, informational (esp about fishing), and natural/environmental displays. Especially enjoyed the dug-out canoe. Yes, it is a small museum in a small town, but if you are in Petersburg for any length of time, is worth a visit. Easy walking distance from downtown (was 3 short blocks from our hotel), and it also has a nice gift shop. As others mentioned, the 20 minute video about founding of Petersburg was worth watching as well. Gives insight into an interesting slice of Alaskan history.
