Lots of history here...

Check for hours as they aren't open 7 days a week.
We enjoyed walking around thru the various buildings which had been relocated to this site. There is a lot of history to be seen and the docents are very knowledgeable.
Figure an hour or two.
Enjoy

Original buildings, antiques and a working blacksmith shop.
may. de 2021
Dont miss this museum as it has the Big Bear history set out as an old mining town. You get to go into the original buildings that were moved to the site. Over one million artifacts, it is hard to leave. Plenty of local docents answer all of your questions and the blacksmith shop is maned by real talkative blacksmiths making items you can buy. Only open a few days a week, kids and I include the adults will have the best time ever

For what it is, it’s a 4 star

This is really small and run by a group of really devoted retired volunteers (at least I assume they were all retired volunteers). There are 12 exhibits and two are under renovations. They do pack a lot into small spaces. If you really take your time and listen to the blacksmith and pan for gold you can spend a full hour there. It’s not fancy, but it was interesting - focuses on showing what life for the early settlers of Big Bear would be like.

Homeschool ADVENTURE!

My 11 yr old son and I had a wonderful time at the museum! My son loved all of the details and history! We did the info hunt and a rock painting. We went back 2x in a row so we could enjoy the nice walk outdoors as we went a second round to admire all of the details and read the descriptions. I know we will be back again. My husband is a History buff, and we all love Big Bear... and the staff was super friendly... what a better way to enrich our family traditions in Big Bear, grow our understanding of our home's history, and give back to the community.... as well as teaching the future generations respect for the hard work of the past that has gotten us to today, and ways we can improve and have improved.

Fun Museum

We like going to this museum. We've been there several times. It is fun to see how people lived back then and to see what it would be like to live in an isolated mountain cabin.

Cute museum

It's a small museum with lots to see. They have a lot of stuff packed into the small spaces. The outside areas are just as fascinating. Take some time with the blacksmiths and they will answer all kinds of questions. Each outbuilding has a dedicated volunteer answering questions, they were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Well worth your time and the small entrance fee.

Worth your time, whether 1 hr quick stop with small kids or staying longer to read it all

Other reviewers have covered it well, but I wanted to chime in with what a fantastic deal this place is. With a 3 and 5 yr old we can't always stay long, but at $5 for adults and kids free you can pop in for even a quick visit and feel you got a great value. Also great that it's open air with lots of different buildings to explore so it stays interesting for little ones. Don't miss it, even if you are worried your kids are too young - plenty to tell them about, great volunteers on site who really try and engage them, plus they walked away with gold, a forged butter knife and a horse shoe that were all included. Great stop!

This museum has a wide variety of historical artifacts, including buildings from the 1800s. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and friendly. The blacksmiths are fun too. Definitely worth the stop.

Considering its location and size, and very nice museum and bargain.

Our local friends took us here during our visit to Big Bear.
Tells the history of the area, the history of the old and the present dam, mining equipment, logging equipment, relocated local structures (cabins, schools, etc.)

Let the kids do some panning. They will probably find some "gold", thanks to guide.

Plan to spend at least one hour, but up to four if you read everything.

Limited hours and days, Wed, Sat, Sun. Plan ahead.

I was not expecting such an incredible experience! It was only $5 and well worth it! I’m 30 years old but really really enjoyed the walk through of the cabins! There was many things that reminded me of growing up in upstate ny that my mother and father had left over from their days! Very incredible experience!
