This is a small park located a few miles from the Castillo de San Marcos and I would suggest visiting this park on the same day because their history is linked. There is not a fort to view but if you take the short boardwalk trail at the end of it are signs indicating where the wooden forts were located. That area is now underwater. If you wish to go to the visitor center check the hours and days it is open.

Highly recommend this museum. It's set up so every age , children included , can engage in this well told part of American history most of us don't know

Good place to learn the history of the period prior to FL becoming a state and several events that took place while Spain owned FL.

We visited Fort Mose the weekend that they were having the “Flight to Freedom” portrayals. This is a part of our history that we did not learn about in school. Florida, being a Spanish colony in the late 1600s to mid 1700s, did not recognize slavery and therefore became a destination for runaway slaves fleeing plantations in the Carolinas and Georgia. Tours are led by historians and volunteers who lead you back in time to experience a little of what is was like for these slaves to make their way south, on what has been called the first Underground Railroad. They faced many obstacles, including bounty hunters, wild animals, diseases, swamps and rivers to cross, but if they made it here alive, they were granted “conditional” freedom, which meant they were required to become Catholic and the men had to join the militia. They then settled at Fort Mose.
Unfortunately, the fort itself was destroyed, but there is a very informative visitor center, and on some dates there are cannon firing and musket demonstrations.
Fort Mose is well worth a visit.

I wish we learned about this in our history books (yeah, & Jamestown was NOT the first settlement, St. Augustine was)! It's a shame that the fort was destroyed twice, but the museum is very informative! I had no idea that the Spanish accepted escaped slaves as long as they converted to Catholicism & helped defend their territory! Very little known history!

The fort is on the north end of the area. And was inhabited by black slaves from the north, mainly Georgia, who escaped to Florida. Florida was owned by Spain and the King immediately declared them free. We really enjoyed that. Easy access, nice visitor’s center and easy parking. No reservations. Park first near "the walkway to freedom" and after seeing that drive further up the road to the visitor center parking. We spent an hour or more. Worth the drive.

So glad we went here! Learned an awful lot about how Blacks settled in the area and specifically at Fort Mose . And how they lived. Before this visit, I had never heard of Fort Mose.

I've visited St Augustine a number of times previously but had never learned of Fort Mose's existence.
We visited late in the day and spent an informative 45 minutes at the State Park, learning the story of how the Fort and surrounding town offered safe haven for slaves who had escaped the north.
As a British person, the story was difficult to take in. On a human level, though, it was inspiring to learn that many did gain some semblance of 'freedom' there in the mid-1700s.
As other reviews have mentioned, there is next to nothing to see of the original forts, but there is a true sense of history in the area.
Special mention to Park Ranger McNaught, who not only restarted the video presentation for us, but kept the museum open after closing time for us to have a look around.

The history here is fascinating, but unfortunately there just isn’t much to see.

We walked the boardwalk over the marsh. It’s a short and relaxing hike. We did see an egret. We also walked to the kayak launch behind the visitors center. It was mostly mud in the marsh.

We did not go in to the museum, as we were a bit crunched for time.
