The Lincolnville Museum located at 102 MLK is really a great educational experience for the entire family.

The exhibit encompasses the civil rights movement and the passions of a community that dates back to 1863. Worth the visit.

Visited the Accord civil rights museum and some of the sites of the Freedom trail. Even the young people were interested!!! No one was distracted by their phones!! Mrs Gwen was very accommodating as we were tardy playing tourists. Just an amazing amazing visit. I cannot thank them enough.

Just a few block off behind the Lightner Museum is the historic Lincolnville neighborhood....built in the mid 1800's was designated as a freedman area. Lincolnville played a role in the underground railroad and in the fight for civil rights. Martin Luther King Jr. visited several times. St. Augustine was the site of the acid in the pool horror back in 1964. It is a shame there isn't more of an attempt on the city's part to make this area more of a designated area to visit. There are signs about, but very little is displayed in advertisements for St. Augustine. Be sure to take a walk about this historic area.

Lincolnville is a must see! Just on the south side of the Old City, the Freedom Trail winds thru Lincolnville in shady streets and historic homes. I have 20+ visits to St. Aug, but this time the gentrification i saw in Lincolnville was sadly much more noticeable. I hope the historic city stands by Lincolnville! Between Fort Mosé and the Freedom Trail, Black History in St. Augustine holds a special place in American history.

This is a thought provoking way to get in a good walk in St Augustine and exercise your mind as well. It is a fairly long walk and the map in the brochure (available at the Visitor's Center) is very small so be alert as you walk for street names you might need later. Also, some street numbers are erratic or repeated so look for the pedestal signs when you are near the location. That said, it is a fascinating look at an era of our history I hope is gone for good. I grew up in a time when "colored only" water fountains were common and it is interesting to note the journey from there to here. Note that the cultural center hours appear to be arbitrary, I have been twice when the sign said open but the doors were locked. Still a rewarding experience.

A hidden gem of the important and troubling civil rights history of St. Augustine. From the Lincolnville District to the lunch counter preserved at Wells Fargo this tour tells the history and struggles of Africa-Americans in St. Augustine - definitely not the city's most august moments.

This was the highlight of my trip to St. Augustine! After doing the touristy things there, I noticed there was very little information on the critical Civil Rights history in St. Augustine, which I found odd. I had seen the doc "Dare Not Walk Alone", so I knew there was more to discover. After emailing and leaving a voice mail with the ACCORD Civil Rights Museum, I promptly received an offer for appointment. The volunteer I met with gave me a tour of the small museum, showed part of a film about Andrew Young's brave protest there and answered my questions. A highlight was my luck in getting to meet Mrs. Cora Tyson, who actually hosted Dr. King in her home next door when he visited St. Augustine for the movement. (He had called St. Augustine the "Birmingham of Florida"). Mrs. Tyson generously shared amazing memories with me of those intense but special times, which I will never forget. I did the Freedom Trail in my car, listening to the recordings at each stop that marked history around Lincolnville. Since I was aware of the history of the “Swim In” at the Monson Motor Lodge in 1964, (where the motel owner threw acid in the pool while black and white protestors were in there), I went to the Hilton hotel, which still has the same pool. I asked the front desk for information, and they instantly showed me 2 areas that are dedicated to that incident, which actually led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act. Don't forget to visit the lobby of the Wells Fargo Bank, that holds the original lunch counter from protests. St. Augustine should do way more to highlight this extremely important history and should fund ACCORD more in order to educate visitors about the movement. Volunteers run ACCORD on a shoestring, and they deserve more support! (I left a donation). History like this should NEVER be forgotten. Thanks to the nice folks at ACCORD for an AMAZING experience!

I am so irate. I'm still here in St Augustine but you better believe that when I return to California, I'm going to write whoever is in charge of marketing services to visitors in this community. After reading these reviews-I realized that I'm not alone-I never heard of the rich contributions that African Americans have made to St Augustine, prior to my visit we stumbled upon Lincolnville - by accident. I learned of the four Black students that were beaten & Jailed because they couldn't eat at Woolworth. A statue commerates the bravery. It got so bad they called MLK to help- there is a whole community of "safe houses" here, for the Underground Railroad- etc.,

We had some extra time to kill since our early morning dolphin tour was canceled. As we were driving around to kill time, we stumbled upon a Freedom Trail sign on Bridge St. We called the number on the sign and listened to the informative recordings on three of the buildings. Before I return to St Augustine I'm going to do some research on the Lincolnville area and then I'm going to put it on the agenda. I think it's well worth the time.

The city of St Augustine is doing this part of history a diservice by not 'marketing' it more. You can't erase history by ignoring it. It is what it is and we're all better off if we learn from the lessons that history provides.

We asked for an African-American history map at the Visitor Center since I had lost mine from the Web. We then walked over to Lincolnville, just strolling through looking at churches, a school, and historic homes. We talked to some local residents and witnessed the gentrification coming to the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center was closed on a Saturday.
