It's hard not to notice Alexander Hamilton Monument when you are in the central part of Lincoln Park, close to Diversey Parkway.

The monument commemorates Alexander Hamilton (1757--1804) -- an American officer, statesman and Founding Father of the United States.

The monument has a long history of the design and changes, the completion of the statue in 1939, and the statue being in storage for 12 years. Finally in 1952, a 13ft (4m) tall bronze statue with gilding, on a granite pedestal, was dedicated in Lincoln Park. In 2016, the statue went through re-gilding.

During this long history several sculptors and architects had contributed to making the monument visible to public the way it looks today. The original designers of the monument were sculptor John Angel, and architect Samuel A. Marx. A famous philanthropist Kate Sturges Buckingham, whose name is inscribed on the pedestal, donated funds for the construction of the monument.

The monument, facing the north of Lincoln Park, stands out in the generally quiet environment. There are only the vast park grounds around it and the high-rises of Lincoln Park Neighborhood nearby. But maybe, this makes it memorable even more. A monument to a prominent historic stateman Alexander Hamilton, looking to the future of his country, is grand and impressive, distinctive and unforgettable.

アメリカ合衆国憲法の草案を作成した人として知られているアレクサンダー・ハミルトンの銅像がありました。グラント将軍の銅像もあり、アメリカらしくて良いです。

There is a monument to Abraham Lincoln located in Lincoln Park. But there is a statue of Ulysses S. Grant in Lincoln Park, not Grant Park. And there is a statue of William Shakespeare in Grant Park and a statue of Alexander Hamilton in Lincoln Park. Go figure. How did Hamilton, who had absolutely no ties to Chicago, end up in Lincoln Park, at 2045 North Lincoln Park West, south of West Diversey Parkway, west of North Cannon Drive and east of North Stockton Drive? Philanthropist and art patron Kate Sturges Buckingham is best known for donating the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain in Grant Park. But she also commissioned the monument to Hamilton, whom she felt was "one of the least appreciated great Americans." She believed Hamilton, who served as the United States' first Secretary of the Treasury, had secured the nation's financial future, allowing her own family to make a fortune in grain elevators and banking. In 1940, she hired artist John Angel to model a figurative sculpture of Hamilton. Finally, the statue was installed in 1952. Today, the gilded bronze statue sits on a simple low granite base, within easy view of pedestrians and drivers from the busy intersection of Diversey, Sheridan Road, Lake View and Cannon Drive on the north edge of Lincoln Park.
