Well worth the visit. Very knowledgeable staff and beautiful property. History at its best. Be sure to look for the ship drawn on the wall

Unique and fascinating court house which has had many uses over the years. The tour was fabulous, given by 2 very knowledgeable men. Many different artifacts provides for a thorough understanding of the property and how life was during its use. Wonderful scale model depicting the ice harvesting business along the Kennebec River. Strongly recommend!

The first courthouse in Maine, and the oldest colonial court house in New England still standing, this well-preserved treasure is not to be missed. Stand where John Adams stood when he argued cases before becoming President. The tour offered by volunteers who have lovingly cared for both the courthouse building and the stories it holds. Don't miss the small cemetery up the gravel road where veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War are buried. A lovely forested hiking trail passes through the property as well. Free admission.

Our visit to Pownalborough Court house was illuminating as it gets. If I may preface, I am somewhat of a Revolutionary War history enthusiast and newly minted at that. My wife an I have spent weeks on end in Colonial Willaimsburg Virginia over the last decade and we are currently supporting members of the AHES (Arnold Expedition Historical Society) This past summer my wife and I visited this historical place alongside the Kennebec River and we were pleasantly greeted by a highly informed tour guide that had an innate passion for history and the role this 1760s Court House structure played in it. For the sake of brevity, I must say that I/we have never visited a historical site that had the ability to transport us from the present to the past than this structure did on that mild June afternoon..

Simply put, the walls will want to talk to you so listen intently!

Pownalborough Court House is a magnificent 1760s building with a remarkable history, including the fact that John Hancock and John Adams appeared there during the Revolutionary Era. The builidng is now a museum and is open to the public seasonally.

Pownalborough Court House was built in 1760-61. It is remarkable both historically and architecturally. It is open seasonally from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Hours listed are for July and August. The Court House played and important role in local, state, and national history. Exhibits cover the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Early National periods. Admission is $5 for adults and free for 16 and under. The location is scenic. There are trails and bald eagle nests on the grounds. This is a remarkable experience.
