What is amazing is that almost all the parks are different. They are all beautiful. Valley of fire has petrified wood, cool rock formations and petroglyphs. Definitly worth the trip and highly recommended. Not too far from Las Vegas.

Absolutely amazing terrain.....great hike....however you NEED TO TAKE A GPS WITH YOU! The start of the hike is marked fairly well, but once you get 1/2 hour in, the signs stop! We ended up getting "off the beaten path".....and ended up completely lost! We ended up having to find an elevated area to scope out the highway or a parking lot! We ended up at a parking lot about a mile away from where we parked. I would definitely go again.....but with a navigation system for sure!!!!

The hike will show you a lot of interesting rock formations with nice touches of color. It can be an isolating hike as we did not come across any other hikers. Definitely a lot photo ops available.

This was our last scenic drive on our 14 day road trip through 4 states and 8 National Parks or Monuments. After 1500 miles, you'd think, "I've seen enough rocks or formations" but every stop there was something different to see. Take one of the side roads down to Stewart's point, Echo Bay or just pull over and walk around at the oasis.

Stopped here on our way to Zion National Park in Utah. The rock formation, color and beauty of this place makes it well worth a visit. The pictures we took were priceless. You can literally spend hours and hours here viewing the magnificent scenery and climbing the many rock formations. I believe the cost was minimal, $15 for a carload.

We hired a Mustang and headed off into the desert for the ultimate USA road trip from the strip. Its a beautiful drive and doesn't take long to get to Valley of fire. The scenery is mind blowing. Its hard to believe it used to be sea bed. It has a visitor centre which is fascinating and you can spend the entire day in this amazing state park, I forget how big some thing like 80 000 hectares (might be slightly wrong) Anyway HUGE!
Vegas has some stunning places to visit apart from the pretty lights.

We started with a tour of Hoover Dam then took the lake road north to Valley of Fire. We stopped at several locations along the way looking at the formations and at the coves that are dwindling down due to the lack of rain and lake levels. There was a toll fee of $10 for us to drive on that highway, but def worth it! That was the only fee we incurred during the drive. All other stops were free. Spontaneous stops are always good for a mixed drink with locals or to enjoy the complete peace we found at the exit of Valley of Fire. You could have heard a pin drop, it was so beautiful and peaceful!! We took lots of gorgeous pictures with the sun hitting the rocks. We hiked when possible. Take plenty of water and make sure your tank is full. Definitely worth renting a car and escaping the Las Vegas noise. :)

This park is accessible from Las Vegas and from Lake Mead area.
We drove from the Lake Mead area on the north shore road. The drive was very scenic, sort of hilly with multicolored stratas of rock along the way. This leads to the east entrance of the park.
There is a 10 dollar entry fee. It is a state park so America the Beautiful Senior pass not accepted.
This park has a nice visitor center with exhibits. You can get a park map at the entrance booth.
We made the mistake of getting to the park at about 4 pm. The park closes at dark. We just had time to take a short drive to the north part of the park and back (recommended by a park ranger) then drive to the west entrance and freeway to Las Vegas.
So sorry it was our last day in the area and we missed having time to hike. A sandy trail on a hill at the north looked inviting.
Apparently several movies were made here.
Recommend you get to park early.
Do not try to see Hoover Dam first on same day.

Valley of Fire is an easy 50 miles from Las Vegas to Overton, Nevada. This is well worth the drive. Take a scenic drive, stop and take in the views, or hike (varying difficulty) the most breathtaking valley filled with multi colored rock formations. Visitor Center is worth the stop. Be sure to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes, bring plenty of water and layers of clothing. A very rewarding day.
