Wonderful nature walk in the city but away from everything. Very relaxing escape, from city life. Need to drive there as it’s pretty far away in Far Rockaway

If you want to get fresh air and bird sightings in NYC, the best place to visit is the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge!

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is in Queens and you can easily access by car (45 min drive from Manhattan) or public transportations (Q52 and Q53 buses or E train at Roosevelt Ave/ Jackson Heights).

The bay is a man made pond with fresh water. That makes it a draw for wildlife, especially birds in migration! Spring time is the best time to visit for bird sightings! Throughout the trail, there are signs designating the different birds you might see, and we saw quite a few! The walk around the West Pond is under two miles. The gravel trail is wide and comfortable and my kids could run around. It is a great place for the city kids to get some exercise and observe nature while still being in the city.

Bathroom: clean
Cost: Free
Parking: plenty of spaces (probably can park up to 20-30 cars)
The administration office is closed now but you can still hike the trail.

Tips: The place is 15 minutes away from JFK. If you want to stretch to a whole day outing, you can also visit TWA hotel, Chic airport hotel in a former terminal with a gym, dining & bar, plus a pool with runway views.

I grew up in Far Rockaway but never knew that this wildlife refuge was there. I recently moved back to New York and decided to venture over there and look around. The staff at the nature center helped guide me through the place and recommended different parts of the refuge to go to. I tried the West Pond and East Pond and was not disappointed. Lots to see! It is a huge area so I recommend comfortable sneakers or hiking boots and you need a few hours to look around and see the beautiful birds, especially waterfowl.

We saw manhattan far across the bay. Also a lot of birds and animals pointed out by our ranger guide, and we saw them thru the binoculars provided by the center.

I've stopped here a few times. It's never been busy when I stop by. There are a few different trails y ou can take to walk around the area. It was a little cold when I stopped by and the sun was setting so it was a quick trip. I walked out to the Tern Nesting area and back. The gravel path is well marked. There were some birds out in the water. It was quiet and not a lot of action going on as the sun was setting. It was a nice quiet walk.

Jamaica Bay is one of the most important stops on the major east coast bird migration route. Birds stop here to rest and feed. The park is continuously monitored by the Audubon Society, who report interesting sightings and thus the park is heavily visited by serious birders.

There is a small parking lot at the ranger station. The marsh is being restored after being damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Views, Views, Views. JFK and the big birds to the East; The NYC Skyline to the West and pastoral ponds, marshes, paths and waterways for kayaks & canoes on Jamaica Bay. Reachable by bicycle (for locals) and car.

Easy to get to by car on and off Belt Parkway. Informative stop with displays and video. Clean bathrooms - men's bathroom has changing table as well as garbage can close by said table! Outside picnic area, easy to get to by mass transit and they also have a bike rack. Nice way to learn about area. NPS passport stamp at information desk - they had a bonus stamp (see photo) as well as a third stamp with the date on it (I think.) Also had activities for kids as well as stickers (free) for them. Definitely recommend.

An all-season refuge from the great city, a birder's paradise and a great walk. Conservation and teaching at work. Love it! I would love to see more nature films shown there, especially those concerned with conservation. Check out "Chasing Coral" on Netflix.

My wife and I had been looking forward to our visit to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for several months. Here in the U.K. This Refuge has an excellent reputation. So with our week in New York this would be the perfect time to visit. So our day arrived we planned to spend the whole day there. We arrived early, 09:00 hrs, we knew the Refuge didn't open until 10:00hrs. Not to worry this would give us the opportunity to explore a little. We planned to walk around the West Pond then return to the visitor centre. So imagine our disappointment when no more than a 100 yards or so from the visitor centre we discovered that the footpath was closed due to work. So we just checked the area we could see, which wasn't much. A Great Blue Heron was the main bird of interest and a House Wren singing near the visitor centre. Now maybe I'm being picky, but all the feeders were empty and didn't look as thought they'd had food in for a while, sadly, not acceptable. We returned to the. Visitor centre, spoke to the staff, who were very friendly and helpful and headed off to the East Pond and Big John's Pond. This was much more like it and every bit as good as we'd anticipated. Good selection of, what I think were common birds. For us a few Highlights were - Black-crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Downy Woodpecker, a pair of Peregrine, Chipping Sparrow and several Yellow-rumpled (Myrtle) Warbler.
This Refuge has immense potential, it was such a shame that at the time of our visit restoration work was in full swing.
