A beautiful area in general to hike. Bring a fishing rod - there are trout! Just make sure you have a license and follow the rules posted.

There are now signs at the beginning of the trail at the parking lot that tell you the trail access is closed and you must enter the trail a mile further down the river. Not sure when this was done but the signs are very clear and really will ruin this hike for a lot of people.

HI Hikers, The MADISON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER walks dogs here EVERY TUESDAY from 9 am to 12 pm. Please help us keep our animals and volunteers safe by LEASHING YOUR DOG while on the trail. We so appreciate it--and our pups do, too! THANK YOU!

We hiked this trail and never knew how hot it was thanks to the beautiful water and shade. The trail is very clean and well maintained and we can't wait to return in other seasons!

This is a nice flat trail that meanders along the Big Laurel Creek and dead-ends at the French Broad River. Parking is along Hwy 25 at the 208 junction. The trail starts to the left of the parking lot. Good sturdy footwear is recommended because of the many rocks and roots to navigate around. Some sections could be an ankle twister if you are not paying attention. Along the way lots of people stop and play in the water.
Total out-and-back is 7.5 miles and the trail is mostly tree covered.

My husband, my pup and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. In late October we found the trail absolutely beautiful. Almost flat, it runs along the river through private property (so stay on the allowed access trail) for about a mile before entering the Pisgah National Forest. There are plenty of spots to step down off the trail and access the river for a picnic.

peaceful, beautiful river trail. Relatively easy to moderate difficulty. Water soothing. Wonderful time of year to hike.

This is a great hike for those that do not want to hike elevation. The hike follows Big Laurel Creek for 3.2 miles until it reaches the French Broad River. The first mile is on private land and trail is in good condition. Once you hit forest service land the trail is not that well maintained and is rocky and there are trees across the path. The views of the creek are beautiful and there are several places you can access the water or climb on boulders. The trail follows an old railroad bed so the grade is gentle. The day we hiked we got caught in a summer storm and had to hike over a mile back in a heavy downpour. Take rain gear if there is a chance of rain, as the weather can turn on a dime. The trail ends at the ghost town of Reunion, NC. We didn’t make it that far, maybe next time. My #3 rating is more a reflection of the trail’s condition than anything else.

My family enjoyed our walk along the Laurel River. We brought a picnic lunch and found a rock about a mile and a half down the trail to eat on. The kids ended up spending another hour playing in the water. The trail wasn’t crowded at all (even on a holiday weekend) and was very peaceful.

We received this recommendation from a couple from Tennessee we conversed with in the town of Hot Springs. The recommendation was originally from a park ranger and it was perfect for our springtime hike with mostly flat trails although there were a few fallen trees and small streams to maneuver along the river. There's parking at the trailhead although it otherwise seemed unmarked.
