An incredible view awaits after a relatively easy hike. Well marked trail and easy parking. It was nice to visit in the low season.

Amazing place to hike the AT. We hiked the area a number of times in all seasons from Lemon Gap, Garenflo Gap and in winter just from the Max Patch Parking lot. It is super windy on the top especially in winter. Dress warm. We hiked in the snow in March on a birthday trip for my husband and it was absolutely beautiful.

One of my favorite spots on the Appalachian Trail. It can be hiked on the trail or you can drive up to it on a beautiful dirt road.

If you want an easier hike go left at the sign so that you will be coming down the stairs at the end of your hike. The views at the top are beautiful but sadly many people ignore the dozens of signs posted and walk all over the fragile plant life, taking away from some of the beauty that is the bald of the mountain.

What a view!! I have been wanting to visit for a few years now and for my birthday my husband took me. The flowers were so pretty. We went through the week, so it was not packed. It was kinda hot, we went mid August. The bald is absolutely breathtaking. Remember to bring bug spray and some water.

You will be amazed at this beautiful place. The surrounding mountains and the beauty is a sight to see. Makes sure you spend a little time here and then head on over to the Iron Horse for lunch!

A stunning hike of outstandingly well maintained trails and endless beauty. The wildflowers put on a display that does not disappoint.

Yikes!!! It’s changed so much and not for the better. The gnats and bugs were out of control just like the overgrown vegetation. Beautiful view if you can tolerate the rest

Beautiful ride up to the parking lot. Last couple of miles gravel road. Last half mile was muddy-clayey due to overnight rain. Drive carefully. It’s a loops hike up about 1.5 miles. If you want to do a section of the Appalachian Trail, then take the left route up (sign says “easiest hike”) about 3/4 mile up it will be a T-section with wooden post.... take left to hike into AT. This section should be in and out hike.... about 3+ miles in you will come across AT Shelter. When you return back to the wooden post, keep going up to the summit..... open expanse of 360 degrees view of the mountains. Breath taking in every direction. Follow signs to go back down the summit towards the parking lot, which will be about 1.5 miles down. Love it all!

Can I get off I-40 at Harmon Den going east and get back in on going west

Can you overnight park at Max Patch? Doing section hikes on the "AT". Looking to slack pack from I-40 to Max.

Wolf Creek Falls? I don’t see anything on here about the falls. I’ve found things when I google it. But I want to hear from people who have been there. We’ll be in a Jeep so I don’t mind the rough roads. I’ve read that it’s across the TN border and about a slow 40 minute drive from Max Patch. If you’ve been there, tell me if it’s worth it.

I didn't go to the falls but if you are wondering about road conditions and you are in a Jeep, you'll have no problem. The roads are usually graded and have sufficient width. The tough part are the curves that never seem to end. Drive slowly and you'll be fine.

I am looking to hike this right before the sun sets to catch the views as the sun goes down and star gaze for a little after. I am interested to hear thoughts about making it back to the parking lot in the dark? Of course, we will have lights with us, but does anyone have any reason why we should not do this? The sun will set around 5:30pm and we will likely head back to the car around 7pm. Thanks!

Its an easy walk. If your nervous about walking in the dark I would take a small flashlight and some walking sticks. Depending on which way you go there were a few steps to take. Easy skill level as path is hard to miss or stumble off

We are planning on taking engagement pictures mid October on a Saturday. Is the bald going to be so crowded that it ruins the pictures?
Escrita el 20 de septiembre de 2019
Not during the weekdays

I plan to hike the Max Patch solo (first time) and stay there for the night. Stupid question, are there bears on Mac Patch? i have done backcountry camping before but with a group of friends but since this time I'll be going alone, I am just a little anxious.
Thanks!
Escrita el 30 de junio de 2019
There could be. Black bears are all over the Appalachian Trail. Store your food in a bear canister or hang it from a tree with the pct method and you will be fine: Bears are more afraid of you and will only be looking for an easy meal
I would be more concerned with Ticks then bears.

Is there a road to get to the parking area that would be suitable for a sedan to drive on?
Escrita el 13 de junio de 2019
Yes, there are actually two roads leading to or away from the parking area. Both gravel. Very dusty and some spots are on the narrow side, so use caution.

Where is the closest restroom?
Escrita el 20 de julio de 2018
It would be about 7 miles away/around 20-30 min. at a campground store on Meadow Fork Rd. No facilities at all at Max Patch.
Escrita el 21 de julio de 2018
Is this inside a forest? Cost money to get in?
Escrita el 18 de julio de 2018
No cost. Max Patch itself is a bald. 360 degree view for miles once on top. You can hike either direction on the Appalachian trail and be in a forest within about 1/2 mile.
