You can find kayak trips, floats, SUP and other river activities but if you want something new and different, try this. River snorkeling is exactly what it sounds like- looking at nature in the water. Kevin provides a high quality wetsuit and TONS of enthusiasm. We saw a hellbender, many types of darters, insect larvae, shiners. Of course we all know that there is tremendous flow and erosion going on but to observe small pebbles and sand swirling around is more interesting than I imagined. There are fish that build pebble piles to spawn and then defend that nest from other individuals of the same species but not other species. These “nests” are then protected spots with the eggs of other types of fish safely laid there.
Kevin met us, oriented us, provided wetsuits and got us safely down the river. Previous snorkeling experience was helpful. I advise against your own wetsuit because his are thick and also there’s lots of abrasion as you crawl around in shallow water.
Activity level is high- holding steady in a rushing stream is an upper body workout.
The trip was a unique event, do it.

Imagine being a fish. Imagine being a fish in one of the three oldest rivers in the world. Imagine having a trained river biologist/conservationist with you showing you the fish, hellbenders, and under-the-river world that is beyond your reality and your imagination.

Kevin will introduce you to the rainbows, chubs, bottom feeders, hellbenders -- their underwater neighborhoods, the fish and critter behavior. It's amazing!

This is not floating down the river: it's floating IN the river, eyeball-to-eyeball with the fish and river critters.

MAKE TIME TO DO IT! it's a thrilling adventure!

(Not for small children but this will inspire teens -- hands on, real-live reason to be curious about the world and interested in science.)

My friend and I had a fantastic time river snorkeling in the French Broad River! The underwater life is simply amazing! Our guide, Kevin, was extremely knowledgable about the underwater world and passionate about sharing his knowledge with us. We saw many different types of fish and also a rare hellbender salamander! The mountain streams in this part of the country have such a rich diversity of beautiful creatures and habitats! I don't know of any other tour company that offers a chance to see and learn about these organisms and their environment firsthand. This is a unique and exciting opportunity!

My group and I had an excellent time river snorkeling with Kevin. It is always wonderful to spend time with someone sharing their passion. Kevin is a great guide, very patient with us, and took ample time to explain everything. He got us all suited up in wetsuits, necessary because of the chilly water, and then we were in the river for more than three hours. I saw schools of large redhorse suckers, many bright minnows and shiners, numerous beautifully colored and patterned darters, some large rainbow trout. I saw more fish snorkeling with Kevin than the last time I snorkeled in the tropics. Kevin is great in that he knows the invertebrates as well, and we stopped periodically along the river to see various sights and creatures. I had never seen a “water penny” before and consider myself fairly knowledgeable. I will say that river snorkeling is a different experience than ocean snorkeling in that the river current is forceful and you occasionally get jostled by rocks. Overall, a great experience and I highly recommend it! I plan a return trip soon!

Who would have known such a variety of beautiful tropical looking fish and river creatures existed in my own back yard! Growing up and living in Transylvania County practically all my life and seeing that French Broad River almost daily, I never would have dreamed the sights to be seen while snorkeling this river. I learned more about the ecosystem and species of aquatic life of this grand old river during my 4 hours spent with Kevin than I have all my life. I believe I just found a new passion. Thank you so much Kevin for an exiting adventure i hope to replicate many times to come! I encourage you to try this experience for yourself with the insightful guidance of Oxbow River Snorkeling. And I highly advise you to bring an underwater camera. Chuck B.

My best friend and I tried this, and we had a blast! I never would have guessed there were so many cool creatures in the river! The best part was feeling like a fish as the current takes you downstream! You'll be treated like family doing this trip, and I would recommend it to everyone!

When I discovered river snorkeling through a new friend I envisioned swimming with the fishies. Oh how good it feels to be so wrong. I was FLYING. Have you ever dreamed you could fly?? As a small child did you envision being a soaring superhero?? This is IT! Combine the steady current of the French New Broad river with the buoyancy of your perfectly fitted wet suit gear (thanks Kev) and whoosh!!!! Take me away.
Under "the sea" you'll be captivated by a whole new world. Fish zipping around refracting the gentle light stream that enters the water will have you in a constant state of "rubber necking". I grew up in the water, lakes, rivers, every water sport made to man- THIS experience is priceless. You won't believe it til you try it. I'm already planning my next trip out. When you're on the water you'll feel like time is standing still. Yet when it's over you'll want to paddle your heart out to head back upstream to continue the journey.
Kevin graciously imparted his wealth of knowledge for the French broad and its inhabitants. His passion flows as freely as the river and I'm honored to have had him as my guide. His commitment to his community, environment and family are so apparent. His desire is to preserve and share this vastly undiscovered domain with all age groups.
There's never enough childlike laughter to be had- your snorkel is bound to fill once or twice due to uncontrollable thunderous giggle fits. This trip will flow through your memory for a lifetime. I'm hooked.

Disclaimer- I am far from an avid "review writer" and Kevin did not prompt me to write. This is my small part in attempt to give back what he has given me.

First I'll start off by saying that you MUST go and try it as I cannot stop talking about it since going. It is that much fun and educational, too. Upon first meeting with Kevin, you know that you are in good hands. He is super passionate about this river and all of its sensitive creatures. There isn't anything you can ask that he won't be able to answer, fully.
It is a unique "flying on surface of water" experience that allows you to be amongst the hellbenders and all of the beautiful and colorful fish. It is this flying down the river feeling that really got me hooked. Mid way into our guided tour,I was thinking about doing it again. My new girlfriend and I are trying to get a bigger group to go. We will never forget this experience.
As a side note, we got the pleasure of meeting Kevin's wonderful and loving family. I needed to be able to leave my two dogs with someone to do this river trip and he arranged for his wife and daughters to do just that. I had no worries. Now THAT is service. I couldn't be happier to purchase another Oxbow River Snorkeling trip, knowing that it's so much fun and that it supports a good local family that looks after this ancient river as their own. Thank you,Kevin and family!!!
