This place is a hidden gem of Asheville. In addition to actual gems, they have a moon rock you can touch, a tire from the space shuttle, and a shark tooth. Our guide had an infectious enthusiasm for all things space and geology. They rarely have tours so check the website carefully.

We had a great night at PARI with our astronomer Melanie even on a cloudy night. Melanie had a planterium setup ready to go in case of the clouds. Melanie brought us through planets, constellations, and stars. She answered all our questions and was happy for our questions to lead the discussion and presentation.

The Stargazing Journey is described as an intimate evening with trained staff. The staff good but 30 people overwhelmed them. Things were disorganized. The promised sunset over the mountains was gone by the time they got us to the observation deck. An enjoyable dinner was promised. The website even asked for dietary concerns. If I knew the meal would consist of a self serve mystery meat and salad bar I would have eaten before I got there.
The telescopes on site were good and as I said before staff was good. The website hypes the night as something really special. For $70.00 a head, its not.

I visited PARI as an interested 68-year-old resident with his nephew as a break from hiking. While there, only one other couple were visiting.
PARI is a group of several buildings, all box-like and built in the early 60’s. The Visitor Center has a series of wide hallways that lead to various oversized rooms, some actual work areas, meeting rooms and others displays for the public.
One filled with “space stuff” another with many rocks in glass cases, several of which were meteorites, one with glow in the dark rocks, one with computers and monitors and a meeting room.
In another cinderblock building was a blowup dome “planetarium” about 25 feet across and 20 feet high with a tunnel-like entrance 5 feet high. You had to either crawl in or bend over and walk in and then be seated on the floor on carpet squares. The guide pointed out the white dots that were planets and then enlarged each dot to show which planet it was. At the end, constellations were projected and then the still images were shifted to show movement. It was like being inside a giant blow-up lawn ornament for Halloween or Christmas.
If you are a space aficionado, attend for a special event, or want time to look through a telescope at night you may enjoy this place, otherwise, it’s age and its presentations make it very underwhelming.

I loved the Gem room. The NASA stuff is ok, not alot of it. Good way to spend the day. The view is amazing from the observation platforms. The signage could be better, it was definitely hard to find where we needed to go.

We recently discover PARI and PARI.edu. We were able to sit and watch in their portable planetarium that they take to schools. Seeing the Digital Satellites was wonderful. Taking the tour was so very interesting and enlightening. They have a lot to cover in the tour and they do a great job. While there are some things that could be updated this really does not take away form the experience. Using the telescopes is open to the public and they offer both pre-college and college level experiences. There is a minimalist cafeteria but food and drinks are available. They have items for sale in small shop area. Hearing about the history of the site and the future was very, very, interesting. There are hiking trails on site as well as many nearby. Brevard and Rosman are close. We will be back and bring others. Seeing the huge 85' wide telescopes and the towers that support them was just plain awesome. PARI is also aligned with several universities. If you are into space or astronomy this is a must stop. Guided tour is included when available.

Traveled into the beautiful mountains of Rosman and Balsam Grove NC to PARI for a very well planned and informative Open House. We toured the gorgeous cabins, had a great lunch in the new cafeteria, toured the grounds and gazed through high powered telescopes high atop the mountain to see almost 360 degrees into God's masterpiece. Must see the gem and rock displays. Very Impressive!!!! Lots of meteor and rock displays well identified from all over the world. Nice gift shop for obtaining a piece of earth and history to take home. PARI is growing quickly to provide educational services for children, high school and college students... you can even name a star! not open to the public everyday, so check the schedule. Enjoy! pgoodson

Our family traveled 2 days from the northeast specifically to experience the Ecilpse at PARI. As a parent, educator and hard working fundraiser, I can appreciate PARI obviously had to repurpose some areas to accommodate the multitude of visitors, displays and simultaneous presentations. Educators do this regularly. Sponsoring an event like the Eclipse is exactly why fundraising is necessary for non-profit organizations. This historical facility is 56 years old & new construction clearly indicates progress & forward thinking management. Kudos to PARI for doing the impossible - managing to feed, accommodate & educate over 1,000 of excited visitors! We have traveled all over this country to special events. The Eclipse event at PARI was by far the most memorable! Our son has Autism, so we never know how he is going to react in any given situation. PARI's staff and the planning that went into this event made his day and ours beyond wonderful! Witnessing an eclipse is an exciting experience no matter where you are, but PARI went all out to make it truly memorable! Parking, transportation, food trucks, comfort stations, educational booklets, exhibits, presentations & ECLIPSE memorabilia - all well planned & perfect! I can't imagine the coordination this effort took, not knowing if the weather would cooperate. Panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mts. and the history and beauty of PARI alone are worth the trip. We've planned another trip to PARI in June. This time we are staying a week to enjoy hiking, a SkyTrek Dinner with nighttime star gazing and the Brevard-Hendersonville area. Bravo PARI for everything you do to honor NASA, share your history, telescopes & treasures and especially educate students & visitors about our facinating universe!

While visiting friends who live outside Brevard NC, they suggested going. We were excited for astronomy displays, kids learning, etc.
Terrible experience.
Tons of new construction while the main building is horrible. Esthetic they try to pull off is “historic” but the exhibits, ugly yellow floors, and clearly leaking ceilings show where the priorities aren’t. No rhyme or reason to the tour. We wandered and shook our heads.
We were expecting a vibrant learning environment, not what we found. I’m a retired teacher, so I was looking for classrooms, displays that excited, and we didn’t see that at all.
The tour that we wandered through was confusing. Red stone rocket was cool, but it’s lost in half hearted displays that aren’t labeled. And the tour switches from space to ricks with no explanation. Just weird. Who knows what science ed is really happening.
The website promises exhibits and learning. I’ll be nice and call that a stretch. From the amount of spending going on, they need to figure some stuff out before I’d go back. Mismanaged and overfunded, didn’t feel like a nonprofit the literature professes.

Hello,
Your opinion certainly matters to us and thank your for your detailed feedback. We are currently under a transition and refocus period at PARI during this first quarter where there are multiple projects and efforts underway to ensure we elevate our visitor and student experiences moving beyond 2018. In addition to new construction, We are also in the process of revitalizing the Visitor's Center experience (exhibit galleries, re-imagined tours, visual aides and aesthetics) and the major points you have noted are to be addressed. If you travel back to Brevard in the near future, we would like to personally invite you back for a new, dynamic, memorable experience.
Thank you,
the PARI Staff

Should we expect cool weather or hot and humid in late July? Not sure if your elevation keeps it cooler.

Can we visit this Wed., April 19 th. three people? We live in Mills River, NC and what times are available?

PARI is open Wednesday 9am-4pm for self-guided tours. They do have guided tours on Wednesday's, you should call for specific times and availability for those. Call 828-862-5554 for more specific info. It's a neat place to explore, I'd suggest bringing along some snacks or a lunch.
