I have been there twice and it’s something you don’t want to miss if you are in the area or are looking for an afternoon getaway. It’s very easy to get to and the walk up to the observation area is not difficult so everyone can enjoy the views.

Absolutely beautiful and worth the walk up there! I have knee problems and my husband has hip problems, we stopped a couple of times, but made it just fine! The drive there is beautiful also!

I have visited this spot multiple times and every time has been an experience. I first visited on a multi-day hike of the Foothills Trail and the second time, I came at sunset. I have absolutely beautiful memories from both times and I will probably visit again despite the windy access road. The observation deck is handicap accessible. My last visit the restroom was locked due to COVID.

Wonderful adventure stop- friend and I had wanted to go for a long time...it was worth it. A twisty curvy drive to the top. The views were awesome. We came on a weekday morning..just a few people were there. So wonderful to see the far off mts. Parking was fine- two vault toilets on property. The short walk to the tower wasn't bad, . Just one bench , do wish they would add info sign markers indicating what peaks are in the distance. Nice how the sc/nc border is marked...you can stand in two states at the same time! wonderful stop- well worth the drive. FREE to visit this site which is a hidden gem

This is an easy Highpoint and it may be the nicest observation space at any highpoint. It also has nice views although the day I visited was overcast. You can hike up the entire mountain or you can drive to a parking lot near the top. Additionally, the parking lot has a vaulted restroom if you need it. The wildflowers were pretty and the bees made the hike up buzz with the wildest sound. Overall I am very glad I came here to see it. Check out the pictures for the view and the observation deck with South Carolina prominently featured.

I had the opportunity to see South Carolina’s highest point. For the casual tourist, the only highlight of Sassafras Mountain is the view from the top of the observation deck. There is a concrete path but it takes you to a set of stairs to the observation deck. On the other side of the observation deck is a ramp but it is inaccessible from the concrete path. To get to the ramp, you have to hike a short gravel trail that is narrow in some spots, so handicap accessibility does need some improvements.

We have visited Sassafras Mountain before (and even have a paver, donated by our HUULaS hiking team on the platform!) We are very fond of this beautiful place.
We traveled there yesterday only to find the gate across the mountain road closed about a mile down from the overlook and trailheads. We don't know where to look to find out why the road was closed OR how to find out in advance of traveling up that mountain if the gate is closed.

Granted it was November, so the vegetation was mostly brown. So the view wasn't especially pretty. And the drive up the mountain curves was over four miles. Plus the restrooms were closed. Considering we had driven 3 1/2 hours to get there, it was a bit disappointing.

Gorgeous 360 degree views. It’s a short stop but worth it. Also, there are some hiking trails around the area if you want to spend more time there. There’s a small parking lot and a short but steep walk to the observation point. There are stairs and a ramp that go up to the top.

My wife and I met here family from Greenville, South Carolina here and had a tail gate picnic in the parking lot. The hike up from the parking lot to the top of the mountain is short and the view is spectacular. I'm sure this place is going to get much more populated as word spreads of the attraction - highest peak in South Carolina

Is it accessible using a walker?

As already pointed out, it is steep. My husband has a bad knee and it was more difficult for him to walk down then up. And we are talking about the big paved walkway that most people use. The "handicap walk" is gravel, overgrown, and poorly maintained.

How long is the walk from the parking lot to the observation deck? Is there an elevator or ramp for individuals with walking issues?

It is a short steep paved path to the top. On the left side is a switchback trail, longer, less steep and unpaved. Beautiful view. We went early in the day and there was less traffic and people, peaceful.

So- do you hike or drive to the top? Some
of the information and reviews are a little unclear.

you can drive to within a 1/10 mile of the summit or do a hike from rocky bottom or from table rock

Hi, Quick question for someone planning a trip there. Are there any restrooms, or anything for someone to change clothes. For example if someone were going to elope, where could they change into their dress? Asking for a friend :)

There are restrooms. Didn’t utilize them but there were at least two.
