Awesome trail, well maintained. Goes all the way into MacGregor Provincial Park and into Southampton. Walk or Bike, if biking watch out for Dogs unleashed. Owners need to pick up. This is an issue no matter where you go.Little more signage and Benches would be nice

Wow, so I really wanted to like this trail but it isn’t very well cared for. We rode a long way with high grass on either side of the trail, and lots of deep loose gravel which made it really difficult to ride. Signage along the trail is almost non-existent. I kept trying to find out where we were by using google but actually lost cell phone contact. So disappointing, cause it could be a wonderful trail.

Did the southern section Oct 17 2020 early on a Saturday ... after 4 rental ATVs passed us. just before turning around.. the rough round gravel became even worse like biking in 2 inches of beach sand.
Random 2,3 and 4 inch river rock everywhere kicked up by ATV traffic. Maybe some proper trail cover mix or even reground ashphalt might help.
I can see why gtog limits mortorized traffic only to snow mobils. Its way better.

We do this ride a number of times a year, driving over to Port Elgin and biking either north to Southampton or head south to the provincial park area. The surface is nice and level, clean stone dust, so the ride is very easy. About the only real issue is crossing highway 21 between Port Elgin and Southampton due to travel volume and there are no crossing lights. Other than, great place to ride. There is parking at the sort of train station, as well as a flush toilet, and there is full set of bicycle repair tools and an air compressor, free to use.

Came for a walk with my friend. The trail is really well-maintained and beautiful. Even though some parts are close to roads, there’s a thick cover of trees which keeps it feeling serene. Great way to access different parts of the towns.

This is a great trail for running between Southampton and Port Elgin. I was based in Southampton for my three weeks in Canada, staying with family. I’d run to Port Elgin and then either get picked up at Port Elgin or on one occasion I took the trolley bus back home. One Saturday morning I even organised my family to bring a change of clothes with them and meet me at the other end so that after my run I could have a refreshing swim in the lake and then change into clean clothes and browse the shops and the street market. I saw lots of signs of bears (poop) but didn’t come across any as I normally ran later in the morning.

The trail is good for walking, but I use to bike, because there I don’t need to worry about cars. It’s always clean and cool, the trees and foliage helps to keep the heat out.,

What a beautiful trail system! A safe place for all ages to enjoy the great outdoors without worry of motorized vehicles.
Unlike other reviewer thoughts, we feel the restriction of motorized vehicles on the trail system is appropriate, and what makes this a safe and enjoyable trail system. In the winter, one can snowshoe, cross country ski and walk the dog (without worry of speeding, loud and stinky snowmobiles). In the other seasons, a relaxing walk or opportunity to walk for a coffee or to the farm store.
Really love the newly added butterfly gardens, they are so beautiful, and the educational signs are a nice touch. A few more benches would be appreciated, but overall, its wonderful and well maintained.

We enjoy walking the rail trail in Port Elgin. We have done it for years now. We especially enjoy it in Spring and Fall.

My wife and I tried to walk the rail trail a week ago outside Southampton. Horrible conditions and definitely a struggle and retreated to our vehicle. As the town for some reason feels the primary need to cater to summer tourists and part time residents of the community and exclude the rail line trail from motorized vehicles like ATV's in spring, summer and fall. But to exclude the trail in winter to snowmobiles is a fail on tourism. The area is missing out on winter tourism advantages of snowmobilers coming in to the towns for fuel, a restaurant or an over night stay. Snowmobilers and the local snowmobile club with a state of the art trail groomer could make the trail fantastic for walking all winter long. Not doing so is bad for winter business. Other communities jointly use their rail lines for multiple uses, Including in this very area. But not Saugeen Shores. Walkers encountered by snowmobilers are no different then walkers encountered by cars. "Right of way". Additionally most sleds are as quiet as cars so proximity to housing is no different then the proximity from a road or street from a snowmobile. For winter use and accessibility when there is snow I have to rate the trail a one. Let it be groomed and shared.
