Find out more about Deal's rich history
sep. de 2021
Arriving in Deal as a visitor knowing very little, the Maritime Museum evokes a great sense of the town's rich history.

It paints a vivid picture of the seafaring exploits of days past, as well as the (unknown to me) history of the Royal Marines School of Music.

The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly - clearly proud of the history too.

A must visit gem!

Walking around Deal you can just feel it's history, so we decided to visit this museum to learn more. There were clear sections in the museum for each part of the town's history - the town itself, maritime, the Royal Marines etc. We found the timeline of the town particularly fascinating (lots of interesting photos as well as info) and were amazed at how many famous historic figures have visited over time! The Royal Marines exhibit was also very interesting. There are some bigger exhibits such as a tiny boat that was involved in the evacuation from Dunkirk but also quirkier exhibits - a diagram a local had made of the High Street shops at 20 year intervals over the 20th century and how they'd changed. The names from the 1970s brought back memories of shops familiar during childhood! There were two lovely lady volunteers there when we visited, both local and it was fascinating talking to them and they gave a lot of additional insight and tales of the history of the town. Just wish we had had more time to spend there, but sadly we only arrived an hour before closing. Would highly recommend, it's well worth a visit.

Deal's present horizon at the sea can be unclear, unlike it's Maritime Museum; giving always a clear picture of its past

Walking along with heavy shopping bags, escaping from the nice but busy shopping area the old fashion sign of 'Museum' dangling softly in the air, invited me in.
I had no appetite for any sort of consumption. But due to the resourceful guidance, which I received at the Maritime Museum with all its articles and such, made me feel hungry for knowledge. As a foreigner to make the first step into the history of Deal, I think, it starts right there at 22 St. Georges Road. Afterward, having a walk alongside the beach, at least I did, I looked at the horizon in a different way.

Local history place

This place was a gem to find but a bit small. Nevertheless, lots of items of historical significance displayed with as the name suggests a strong maritime flavour about them.
Old building with a tight staircase but easy to climb.

An enlightening and fascinating two hours.

Having visited Deal a few times I was surprised and delighted to find yet another place of interest. Situated in a characterful area only a few minutes from the sea front, in a side street that starts opposite the French delicatessen, between the Town Hall and St George's Church, also worth a visit.
The Museum volunteer on duty was hugely informative and entertaining and he contributed greatly to our enjoyment and understanding of the multitude of exhibits.
Check the opening hours before visiting.

Thank you for your lovely review. People are still discovering us even though we'll be celebrating our 50th anniversary in a couple of years time. Please do spread the word about our little museum!

This small museum is worth a visit tucked away in a side street of Deal. Plenty to see as everything is packed in tightly. I had the museum to myself which was good for me but not for business! One of the highlights was a quiz about Deal. There was a small garden with a shed that showed videos and information about the war. I liked the old street maps. In short something for every one. Pleasant staff too.

A Wonderful Little Gem

Deal Maritime and Local History Museum is a lovely little place crammed full of quirky artifacts and oddities. The building itself is an interesting one of Deal's many conservation areas and worth seeing in its own right. The Town has such a wealth of history and information on most of it can be found in this charming little museum.
