Impressive site, but poor presentation
sep. de 2021
Definitely worth a visit, with well preserved walls and fortifications. However, the information boards around the site were very short on content, and it was difficult to actually get a timeline of developments on the site. The not dissimilar Burgh Castle in Suffolk does it much better.

We spent a pleasant hour wandering round, but had to rely on our own knowledge of Roman history in Britain to work things out. A tad expensive for so little help from English Heritage.

Well worth a visit

Very limited displayed information unless you buy a book or download an app. Thankfully a very knowledgeable volunteer Dave, gave us so much information and made our trip so much more interesting.

looked for the site several years ago, found this tear by using the post code

Due for an upgrade later this year to the museum and information centre. A bigger site than I expected, with much higher thicker walls, still standing in plces

Great place to see Roman Britain
ago. de 2021
I have taken school parties here before and wanted to revisit with family.
I was not disappointed. It remains impressive. It also requires detective work and imagination. The sea has gone, few walls remain and it is a matter of 'here stood'. The brief small museum helps.
So don your deerstalker and explore 2000 years of our history

A must for anyone interested in British history

Had an incredible day at Richborough. The guide Alex said he didn’t understand why it is not massive on the tourist trail- and I agree. Such an important part of our history. The Romans came there in 43AD. After a few skirmishes with Boudicca, they then built an incredible quadraphon - a beautiful 4 way marble gate. Richborough was a hugely important settlement. It was by the sea as Thanet was an island. The excavation shows it’s decline too. They built a defensive wall and had to put it up pretty quick in the 4th century. Alex was a fantastic guide very knowledgeable and a great communicator. Cannot recommend this place more highly.

Fantastic site with really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Some very impressive ruins and an interesting history - even for a non Roman enthusiastic like myself!

Roman history and ruins at its best
jun. de 2021
I gave it 5 marks because it is a remarkable set of Roman ruins, with such a history of the arrival place of the Romans, though so much has been lost to us of what was here.

There is a large car park and then a short narrow track leading to the office where you buy your tickets if you don't already have them. There is also a very small shop and museum.

Walking around the site you get the best sense of what you are looking at by reading each of the information plaques. This was obviously a very important site of entry for the Romans, if you are interested in history I think this is likely to be a 'must see'.

Huge ruined fort

Massive fort- great place for kids. There is a small museum which gives you an idea of what it looked like in the past. Fascinating

Impressive remains of a Roman fort built on a large scale.

We visited Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre on a midweek morning. We drove to the fort and there is a good sized (free) car park for visitors. Due to the current Covid 19 restrictions, visitors must prebook their trip and we had a 10AM slot which allows entry up to one hour after this time.
The site is run by English Heritage and being members, access was free though we additionally bought an adult ticket for our son. We had also pre ordered the accompanying handbook and this gave a great deal of information not only on this fort but also it’s now lost ‘sister’ at Reculver.
Visitor toilets are available at the car park and entry to the site is via a short path to a visitors centre. The lady in the visitors centre was very helpful explaining how to best view the site and also directing us to the small museum which also gave a brief yet insightful introduction to the forts history. An audible guide is available which can be heard using a smartphone by scanning a QR code.
The fort is quite spacious and comprises four outer walls in various states of ruin and inside these are the footprints of some of the previous buildings and structures including what must have been a very impressive triumphal arch. Defensive ditches from earlier incarnations of the fortifications are also clearly visible. Information boards are provided around the fort giving additional information.
The site of the amphitheatre is a raised mound a short distance away from the fort itself and may be reached either on foot from the fort or by car if you can get a space in a small layby nearby, though this still entails a short walk across some fields. We chose not to do this.
If you are interested in the period of Roman occupation in Britain or just curious there is a good amount to see here, though don’t expect anything comparable to the ruins of Pompeii or Rome itself.

Visited this wonderful site on Bank Holiday Monday and I have to say how awestruck I was. When we arrived we were offered a tour round the site by Alex, a volunteer. What a font of knowledge he turned out to be , beats the audio tour normally offered. He put up with our non stop questions with good grace and answered every single one of them. Weather was not on our side and it started to snow but that still did not put us off but we will come back in sunnier times, hopefully.
If you love history, you will love this place.
