Awesome for wildlife, especially the hawthorn hide, got some great pictures of the sparrow hawk.
Also plenty of smaller birds like tits, goldfinch, tree creepers, to many to mention.

I remember going to this place on a school trip when I was a wee bairn, except back then it was called Washington Wildfowl Park. In the meantime it seems to have changed its name to Washington Wetland Centre, which seems odd as it is still full of wildfowl! Mind, it was defo wet there, thanks to days of rain following Storm Babbet and a heavy drizzle during our visit. Some of the paths and birdwatching huts down near the river Wear were closed off due to flooding apparently, but this was hardly the park’s fault

Anyway, as a mum of two now, with a restless boy and a toddler to occupy, trying to find places that will interest and entertain them (and hopefully tire them out) is sometimes a challenge. We decided to go here as our boy enjoys the birds he sees at local parks and out on the coast, plus they had a few Halloween activities on.

The park is a big loop with ponds all around it, with different types of ducks, geese and swans to see, some very exotic looking and colourful (the black swans were my fave). Signage told you all about them. The park is famous for its flock of Flamingoes, which were very pretty and interesting to watch. My son nicknamed them "the angry birds" because he thought there hooked beaks made them look annoyed!

He was excited to learn that the park has otters, which the woman at the entrance was enthusiastic about. However, we missed the morning feeding and when we got to them they weren’t out in the open, instead hiding inside and impossible to see as their enclosure is not lit, the tiny windows are too reflective, and they had pushed straw or something up against them too. He was very disappointed by this. We couldn't justify hanging around until later for the afternoon feed as he was bored by then.

The “playscape”, made up for it a little - basically a slide, an Archimeedes water screw (which fascinated him) and climbing frame, though thanks to the drizzle it was all wet (again not the parks fault) and he got proper grimy. There was a swing too, but this was barriered off – another disappointment for him as he likes a good swing!

In other areas the bug safari remarkably bug free, the duck nursery was also empty and we saw no sign of any pond life in the pond area, though all this could be a time of year thing.

All in all, this is a nice place but it looks and feels a bit run down and needs a bit of a spruce up in places. Admitedly we were off season, and it may be better in the summer and on a better day weatherwise, but it was all a bit underwhelming. The lady on reception was nice and enthusiastic, but a lady on a stool nearby in the crafts area looked very bored and miserable. The cafe has a nice rustic feel and a nice view, but the food is plain and felt overpriced for what it is. My husband said the mens toilet could have been cleaner too. Two padded mats leading in and out of the place were horribly waterlogged and filthy and really shouln't have been there.

Also worth mentioning is that the path between the visitor centre and car park (which its worth mentioning is large and free) is quite steep, and uneven due to tree roots pushing up beneath the tarmack. It made pushing a buggy up more difficult than it needed to be, and may be a problem for the disabled and elderly. I didnt see an alternative route that was easier.

Hi there, thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit to us. Many of your comments relate to the weather and out-of-season activities which unfortunately are out of our control, which you have mentioned. We've answered some of your other queries below: The mats at our entrances are a preventative measure for bird-flu and it is a requirement that they are there. These are filled with a gentle disinfectant to clean visitors shoes on entry to prevent risk to our birds. We're aware that access on the main path from the car park is steep, however we offer visitors with accessibility concerns the opportunity to use our vehicle path either walking or as a drop-odd, which is less still and more direct - this is sign-posted from the car park and at the top of the visitor path. We appreciate your comment about the otter exhibit, our feeds (as you mention) are the best times to see the otters as they - like us - feel the cold and enjoy spending time inside. The inside areas are their safe spaces and where they both rest and sleep, meaning they are unable to be lit unfortunately. While this can be frustrating it is the best thing for them and I hope you'll appreciate that their welfare is of great importance to us. The bedding against the window is again unfortunately something that they move around and not something we can move too often (even though it is regularly changed and cleared). Our slide in the play area has been closed off so for this we apologise - we will be working to get this resolved and a solution in place to add to the variety of other play equipment available for visitors to enjoy. With regards to your comment on our name - while we do have a lot of wildfowl both in our collection and on our wild reserve, we do also look after the whole scope of wetlands and our focus is birds as well as the variety of mammals, plants, trees, insects, fungi, amphibians and many other animal species that our wetland and woodland habitats look to protect. As a wetland centre this fits more accurately with our purpose. Your comments about our cafe with be passed to our trading manager for review. We do hope you will give us another try on a better weather day. Many thanks

We became members of WWT in February 2023 and have visited Washington Wetlands around 10 times so far this year, as well as one night time Bat event.
No matter the weather, season or time of day this place is magical. A perfect haven amongst a jungle of urban life and a true wonderland for wildlife.
This place is so needed and does a fantastic job of protecting the wildlife and landscapes, educating and inspiring people and providing a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

As a local, you could visit for a quick hour walk or spend all day here as there is so much to see. So many beautiful hides, a great variety of landscapes from lakes and reservoirs to woodlands and ponds, and of course a stunning collection of beautiful birds both resident and visiting.

The membership is so worthwhile at around £7 a month, we as a couple have been over the moon to have joined and will remain members as long as possible.

I'm personally a huge fan of gift shops and this one is gorgeous. Packed with everything from pretty little keepsakes and gifts, to books, soft toys and everything in between. There is also a cafe with a reasonably priced and inclusive menu that caters for vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free and more.

The majority of the site is accessible, with plenty of benches to take a rest, picnic tables with space for wheelchairs and the possibility to borrow a motorized scooter if needed.

I can't end this without singing the praises of the staff and volunteers. We have yet to encounter someone who isn't completely brilliant. They have all been very welcoming, kind, helpful and knowledgeable.

WWT Washington is a jewel of the North East and all who call this place home/work (birds and humans) are absolute gems. A photographer's paradise! This place means a lot to me and I am so glad to have found it.

Popped in while passing en route north. Didn't have any expectations of what we'd find. What we got was a gem of a place that delayed our trip by almost a full say.
Birdlife in center area are fascinating. The huge area open to all types of environment from River to field to woodland, is spectacular. Severe flooding did nothing to dampen our visit. Staff are absolutely delightful, helpful and really good fun to talk with.
The café is a cracker with the most delicious home style cooked food, lovely staff again and a great atmosphere.

What a gem. We visited on Wednesday 13th. Staff very helpful and friendly. Special mention to the young man who did the otter and flamingo talks, very interesting and informative.
The hides were clean and even had cushions on the seats!. I forgot my bird book however the hides had copies in situ. which was a bonus.
Don't bother with a picnic (though there are lots of picnic tables available) the food in the cafe is excellent, we had the biggest fruit scones ever (baked on site). Coffee very good quality and most importantly, hot!
Great play area for kids too, so we'll bring the grandchildren next time.

Called here for something different to do as my son loved it when he was a toddler.
He’s 7 now and came with my daughter, 1, and my friend and her 2 year old and baby.

It’s good for having a wander around in the fresh air and seeing the various birds. We listened to the otter talk which was informative and good. The flamingos are lovely. Plenty of space for walking around. Lots of huts around the lake for bird spotting.
Nice play park - mud kitchens with sand were a big hit.

I would highly recommend bringing a packed lunch as the food was extortionately expensive in my opinion.
£6.50 for a toastie, £7.95 for a jacket potato. Average quality.
The kids hotdog cost £5.95 and was a sausage rather than hotdog which my son wouldn’t eat so I ended up buying the ‘adult hotdog’ for him.
Just ridiculous to be honest.

I would have been tempted to get a yearly pass but I just don’t think it’s worth the price tag. Today cost over £70 including the food. Unless you’re a real bird enthusiast you can do similar for free, for example around Penshaw monument with ponds, paths and parks.

I think this has potential to be a really exciting day out for families but just isn’t. No indoor area for the kids anymore in the discovery bit.
Can’t feed the birds because of the flu.

I just think it could be more engaging. A trail to follow with characters to find? An interactive area inside? Staff running activities? I don’t know.

Hi there, Thanks so much for taking the time to feed back on your visit. Your comments on our talks are much appreciated and we're pleased you enjoyed your walk around the lake. We're also pleased your family enjoyed the nature kitchen in the play area. Your comments about our cafe menu will be fed back to our catering manager, so thank you for those. Unfortunately we are limited by space indoors. Our Discovery Centre is an education space which has been dedicated to schools and special events for the last 3 years. We are all about being outside rather than indoors, and as a nature-based charity we try to encourage this as much as possible so visitors really appreciate what being outdoors has to offer. Handfeeding isn't possible due to the risk of bird flu in our collection birds. While we understand this can be frustrating, we must take steps to protect our animals in every way we can. We will be looking for alternative engagement activities in the future as we know this is an exciting part of a visit, so please keep an eye out. If you visited throughout the summer, we had a range of daily activities taking place for families to get involved in (pond dipping, creative crafts, art sessions, minibeast hunting and many more). These sort of events are ran over each school holiday period and provide visitors a variety of nature-themed activities to enjoy as part of their day with us. We also have a selection of spotter guides to search for a multitude of wildlife while here available for visitors to pick up and enjoy free of charge. Our Drawn to Water: Quentin Blake trail was also running during the summer with a guide and trail markers around our site. I'm sorry to hear you feel our annual membership is not worth the cost. As a charity, your visit really does mean a lot to us and helps us to support conservation for a multitude of exotic ducks, geese, swans, flamingos and otters - all of which you wouldn't be able to see elsewhere. Our membership scheme (which works out at £8.75 per month for a 2 adult family with up to 6 children, with other options available) is a cost effective way to be able to support our conservation work (in a similar way to charities such as WWF) but actively see the work and animals you are supporting. As a member you can also take part in all of the activities held throughout the year with no additional cost. If this was something you'd be interested in doing please do let us know. Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope you visit again in the future and perhaps attend some of our events to really help make the most of your visit.

This lovely place is well worth a visit if you are a fan of wildlife, there is an amazing variety of wildlife here including 3 adorable otters. They have great facilities and a cafe and shop. The area itself is well paved and is undulating but not too steep if you are using a wheelchair. It certainly is well worth a visit if you are stuck for something to do.
