Society Based on the Values of Peace, Equality, and Social Justice
oct. de 2020
Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum is an open-air museum site. Located in the Ontario community of Sharon, the 1.8-hectare site features nine heritage buildings, each with its own history, and over 6,000 artifacts linked to David Wilson, a religious and political leader from New York State. Born in 1778, Wilson established a small sect known as “The Children of Peace” or “Davidites” on the now historic site in 1812 after the Society of Friends (Quakers) disowned him. The sect (about 350 members) retained some Quaker mysticism while placing great emphasis on ceremony, music, and practical education. As the primary minister to the group, Wilson led the construction of site’s remarkable buildings, the best known of which is Sharon Temple, now a National Historic Site of Canada. Built between 1825 and 1831, the Temple serves as an architectural symbol of the sect’s vision of a society based on the values of peace, equality, and social justice. Other restored buildings of note include David Wilson’s Study, the Ebenezer Doan house, the “cook house”, a log cabin, a drive shed, and a round outhouse. Under the leadership of Wilson, the Children of Peace established a co-operative economy founding Ontario’s first credit union and a land-sharing system that helped make Hope (now Sharon) one of the most prosperous farming communities of the time. It also established the first co-operative – The Farmers Storehouse – marketing produce and lending money to local farmers. Caring and charitable, the sect also built the province’s first homeless shelter, created the first civilian band in Canada, and built the first organ in Ontario. Most of “The Children of Peace” were also strong political reformers, and several joined William Lyon Mackenzie’s force in the Rebellion of 1837. The sect also helped ensure the elections of both “Fathers of Responsible Government”, Robert Baldwin and Louis LaFontaine. Following the death of Wilson in 1866, the strength of the sect diminished, and services at the site ended in 1886. Look for Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum at 18974 in Sharon. It opened as a museum in 1918 and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990 because of its historic and architectural significance. Operated by the Sharon Temple Museum Society, it is open seasonally Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. Final admission is at 3:45 in the afternoon. Pre-purchase your admission online in advance. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for youth (6-17). Be sure to check out the “Road to Rebellion” exhibit during your visit. The site is accessible by a variety of public transit options, and parking at the site is free.

it was good but a little difficult walking through the snow with a stroller & walker. Everyone was so helpful. Some really unique venders. Just a little cold with the doors open in December. The temple is so beautiful!

Sharon Temple, much more than expected
ago. de 2019
I visited Sharon Temple as a member of a cycling group.
My expectation was a quick tour of one historic building (The Temple) .
The Temple site consists of numerous restored buildings from the 1800's all of which complimented and enhanced the history of Sharon Temple.
The bonus was the detailed and interesting tour by David an intern at the site.
Only a short distance from Toronto and highly recommended.

Sharon Temple is a gem.

The Temple itself is something special and well worth the visit. Set in beautiful grounds and surrounded by other related period buildings and the small museum. The staff are very helpful and provide an interesting and informative tour. Twelve of us rode our bikes out to the Temple from Aurora on the Nokiidaa trail and found an excellent connector trail that brought us up to the Temple from the 2nd Concession Bridge. We ate our picnic lunch in the grounds and David (a museology graduate student and intern at the Temple) was our tour guide. He was first rate. Thanks too to Lori and Melissa for setting it all up.

Not only is this a rich in historical site to see, but for me it is also an ancestral site to see. The mastermind and builder behind the Temple itself was none other than my 4 x Great Uncle, Ebenezer Doan.

Lori, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and background of many of my family members, including my 3 x Great Grandfather Judah.

It is a grand old building used by the Chidren of Peace around since the early 1800's. The building is rather basic, but very unique. Our group was very impressed by the grandness of the building and the basics in the building. The History was very interesting about how the building was used and then left abandoned for years the was brought into use again to present day.

If Walls Could Talk
oct. de 2018 • Amigos
If only walls could talk. Sadly, they can't so if you plan to visit the Sharon Temple, my advice is to arrange for a guided tour of this fascinating architectural wonder. A good docent is everything....and our little group was blessed to be guided by Megan Houston yesterday afternoon. I don't know what we thinking when we planned to stop by the Sharon Temple for 30 minutes or so. We stayed for two hours...and learned so much. The four of us were enriched by the experience. Well worth the trip.

We enjoyed our recent visit to the Sharon Temple. The other buildings on the grounds were also very interesting to see. Thank you to our young tour guide who did a great job showing us around. We are lucky to have this landmark preserved for future generations.
