Wonderful property. Original buildings made me feel like I was walking through history. We watched the iron worker heat and work some metal while giving us some history. The fellow in the print shop and the one in the wood working shop were also very friendly and informative. I would have liked to walk around more, learn more about the original owners, but the day was a bit too warm.

Small streetside signs will lead you to the nondescript property entrance gate, but my wife & I still had a difficult time distinguishing the surrounding residential properties from the Museum site itself. Once we dead-reckoned our way to the Visitor Parking and determined that the Visitor's Center & Gift Shop had been moved to the Metz Exhibition Building down the unpaved road, we were in for far more regional history & historical artifacts than we ever expected. The woman at the check-in desk was very friendly, while the gentleman in the Print Shop was intimately knowledgeable and had a remarkable manner of explaining the old machinery & the craft of printing. The rest was left to us to follow the hand-colored property map & explore, which we did happily for well over an hour.
Walking grades are easy in most places around the property. If you spend the time to read about & admire the indoor displays, you will leave with an increased awareness & appreciation of what Rhode Island farm and coastal life were like in the 19th & early 20th centuries. We were particularly impressed by the collection of period vehicles in the Carriage Barn, while the Carpentry Shop & Blacksmith Forge were each full of fascinating tools-of-the-trades with informative signage. Overall, the South County Museum is a very good place for adults & children to learn some unique history in a peaceful setting.

Large farm with dedicated buildings showing 19th century and early 20th century life. A great place to spend some time. The staff is courteous, patient, and knowledgeable about everyday life of the times. Interesting exhibits and demonstrations including a blacksmith shop, transportation museum, and farm animals. Many photo opportunities. Don't be deceived by the directions which lead you through a residential area- the museum is easy to find!

a little disappointing. we thought based on the description online there would be a full farm and a little bit more to do. We walked through in about less than 30 minutes. there was a coop with some newly hatched chickens (about 100 I believe) and there were 2 goats and 2 sheep, locked in a pen and behind a locked gate. The only animals you could get close enough to see were the chickens, and 2 wild rabbits that ran by us. The old printing room was interesting and some of the machines allow you to test them out, but it's self guided so unless you already know how to work them, they are unusable. I don't think i got enough out of the $12 admission fee to get in. It wasn't a complete waste but i wouldn't go back again. I do want to say that the staff working there were extremely friendly and welcoming!

The South County Museum is a wonderful if often overlooked Rhode Island treasure. If you have any interest in New England history or folk art, you will be delighted with their diverse and entertaining exhibits and collections.
A highlight for us was the print shop, which showcases the advancement of print technology from Guttenberg's Bible up through the dawn of the computer age, via an impressive collection of vintage presses (which still actually work). Blaire Gagnon, one of the museum directors, did a great job showing us (for example) how type was set, explaining why capital letters are referred to a being "upper case" and much much more.
And a visit to the print shop was just the beginning. The main exhibit hall had interesting collections in a wide variety of areas, including Native American artifacts, a Victorian kitchen, vintage doll houses and dolls, as well as more offbeat displays of things like art made by soldiers from shell casings during trench warfare. The carriage barn had a collection of horse drawn carts, including a 1830s hearse and a 1860s carriage purchased 80 years later by a person worried about gas rationing during World War Two.
It's also kid friendly, with activities and "Please Touch" exhibits that will make this a trip the entire family will enjoy.

The Museum was quite nice. They had several different exhibits including an old Rexall drugstore. There were several Rhode Island baskets 🧺. The Museum hosts many wonderful Special Events including the Annual 4th of July Chicken Hatching 🐣 . Children and adults can actually hold the newly hatched chicks 🐥 in their hands. A terrific group of fiddling musicians entertained us most of the day. They were delightful!!!!

Recently when three of us were biking on Rt1A we noticed a sign for the museum. One of the ladies in the group summered nearby and had been to the new location. it is not a large complex with about a half dozen buildings, but an interesting way to spend an hour or so away from the beach. Grounds are attractive and a diversion from the water
