Do not miss this somewhat hidden gem. You can spend a long time in meditative silence but do protect against mosquitoes.

Gorgeous nature trail, where we saw hundreads of birds and my first alligator in Texas ever! The wooden pasarelles connect to a beautiful nature walk

We could have spent the entire day here just watching the pelicans alone. We identified at least a dozen different birds and we are just beginners! The viewing platforms were fabulous and the stroll along the boardwalk over the wetlands was well worth the time. Other people on the trails were eager to share their sightings making this a very positive experience.
Don't be put off if you get a whiff of the sewage disposal plant, it was not evident once parked and on the trails. Highly recommend!

A must visit. International groups and many “Birders” come here especially during migration time. Several species of birds and wildlife.

What a great place for a relaxing walk in the tidal marsh.
The variety and abundance of sea birds is breathtaking.
One of the biggest alligators you've ever seen is the boss of this swamp!

Since we live nearby in Corpus Christi, we come here several times a month (perhaps more in the Spring). "Boots" the resident gator was sunning near the main tower in plain view. We saw many white pelicans, egrets (including a tri-color) and spoonbill. Very nice time of year to visit

This preserve was full of birds, easy to walk path, and free. The sunset was beautiful. We didn't see an alligator, but I did see a Roseatte Spoonbill, a bird I had never seen before. Breathtaking!

It was a cooler blustery day, but we tried this out anyway, as it sounded like a worthwhile stop. Very glad we did , because, although we aren’t birders, it was impressive to see all the various birds congregating within easy viewing distance. There are lots of posters identifying many of the birds that gather there, so with help from that, we were able to pick out and identify many of the unfamiliar birds. We’re from Canada, so it was even more interesting seeing many of the same birds we have at home during the summer in their winter “residence”. Well worth braving the cold and wind to see this. Well done!

Perhaps not the best of weather. Very windy with on shore gusts of 45mph. Also a bit of beach overwash.

Great visit for birdwatching, lots of variety so bring your cameras and binocs. Boardwalks are good to walk on and and most of sites i believe are wheel chair accessible but phone ahead. There are alligators as well sometimes. I would return again, great views.

No dogs are allowed in the birding center. I left mine at the rental house.

When is the best time to come for the spring migration?
Escrita el 26 de enero de 2020
There is a fun event at the end of February, "The Whooping Crane Festival", this site doesn't allow links but you can search it.
Also give Aransas Bay Birding Charters a call as they will be able to tell you what birds return when.
We love the Turnbull birding center and unlike others who posted we were so excited to see the gator!! We had been going for years before Hurricane Harvey and never got to see one. The new boardwalk is awesome and we hope they will keep expanding.
There are some other sanctuaries near and in Rockport which is just a short drive so search those as well.

I read something on Whooping Cranes that come to the area, and now I cant find where that is. Would you happen to know?
Thank you

The Aransas National Wildlife webpage is a good source of info
The Whopping Cranes generally arrive in October and stay until March
Hope this is helpful

NO dogs, please. Not at this small locale. Birders are trying to see lifetime listers; you will be ousted. Follow other directions above for dog care. Mustang Island dogs okay.

What are the hours of operation? What are the entry fees?

No entry fee, open 7 days a week and open 24 hours but daytime would be best. They have a small parking lot and a person just walks along a path. No employees or entrance gates. No concessions. Very much open to the public.
I am not allowed to post a link but if you search, you will see some information from a Texas tropical trail site.
We were in Corpus Christi and caught this site on the way back home. It was a nice stop - simple but enjoyable to see wildlife. Cheers!
