Beautiful, well maintained nature reserve, a wildlife haven, lots of walking involved on paths around perimeter giving high up views over the reserve ideal to spot birds in flight.

Excellent walks with hides and very welcoming staff. Small gift shop and help yourself cafe which is all part of the welcoming experience

This is obviously a well loved birding area. We miss timed our own visit and did not get the best results. Pay attention to seasonal changes. We know it pays off seasonally, just not our luck

Great place to visit, lots of walking areas surrounded by nature. Probs better for older children as mine got tired, but enjoyed it nevertheless.

Visited here for only the 2nd time today. Was a lovely experience. Not going to pretend to know lots about birds, but we did see and hear lots of them. Great place to go and unwind, with several miles of walks. Do not understand some of the negative comments on here. Costs only £4 to park for all day and no other admission fee. Staff have to be paid and the vast site maintained. Did not have the chance to go into the visitor centre so don't know what exactly was in it. My only criticism's are that site could do with a bigger car park. Also some more information boards about the site itself and it's past mining links would have been appreciated.

Hi David! Thanks very much for your feedback - we're so happy to hear you enjoyed your visit, and hope you will continue to visit us for relaxing walks! Please do pop in to the visitor centre next time to say hello - we currently have a lovely gift shop as well as takeaway refreshments, and our staff and volunteers would be pleased to say hi and chat to you about the site. Very best wishes, Jen

It is many years since my previous visit. Since then, the reserve has been transformed and made more accessible. No longer do you need to park by the roadside! If you are an RSPB member, the car park is free. There was a good variety of birds including avocets. The volunteers were friendly and helpful.

The car park is not large and costs £4. The visitor centre is not currently open. There are lots of pleasant walks through woodland next to water. Birds are everywhere to see although the hides are currently closed. A delightful exercise place.

Hi GREENAWAU, Thanks for your review, we're really happy to hear you enjoyed your visit and that you became an RSPB member! We hope you and your family get lots of enjoyment out of it. If you haven't visited it already, we also manage another site called RSPB St Aidan's which is less than 4 miles from Fairburn. As members you can park there for free and it's a fantastic site to explore. Best wishes, Nicole.

We decided to visit not knowing if any facilities would be available. Pleased to see Portaloos in carpark plus staff giving advice and selling cold drinks. Visitor centre still closed and one way system in place round the reserve. We decided to go to look for the Cattle egret and spoonbill and were fortunate to see them with some help from fellow birders with a scope. It wasn't too crowded so we were able to have a good walk in the sunshine and we had brought our own food for a picnic. A great day out!

Hi, Thankyou for your lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your day with us. Amazing to see both cattle egret and spoonbill! We have another site Rspb St Aidan's just 3.5 miles further upstream on the river Aire. Its definitely worth a visit. Best wishes Jan

Worth a visit especially around St Aidens, but sadly I got lost and ask for help to get out from a member of staff. She was quite rude and sharp. Made me feel quite sad. If i worked there I would love it.

Hi l8741Slemmat, Thank you for your review. We're very sorry to hear that the staff member you spoke to wasn't more helpful. As a team we pride ourselves on our visitor experience so to read this is upsetting for us too. We hope you give our wonderful sites another chance. Best wishes.
