This may be the equivalent of the salons in France but it is so much better, The ideas exchanged here lead to the great break up with England. The small rooms held big egos and ideas.
BUT you can sample the best drink in the Americas at the time to rejuvenate the mind. (Their words and I am in full agreement!) Hot chocolate as the colonial Americans drank it. thick, frothy and not like the stuff you buy today with the blonde girl on it. Trust me you will love it and end up buying some to take home!

Definitely make your way to the Powell House. Its waaay at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street behind the Capitol Building. The hands on activities make it worth while. Lovely garden as well.

The docents were dressed according to the times and gave easy to understand explanations of the work and people of the 18th century.

We struck lucky on Christmas Day ... there were several of the re-enactors on site..... we got a great insight into family life in the 1770s. Magnificent house.

After discovering that this house was closed, I asked the driver of the shuttle bus about it and he told me that it use to be a hands on location for children where they could experience life during colonial times but that is closed months ago with no prospective reopen date.

The Powell House is included in the Colonial Williamsburg passes. It contains hands-on activities, mostly geared to children. In a working kitchen children can help the cook prepare colonial recipes and clean dishes. In the yard and inside the house there are various games that you can just pick up and play.

It was really hot the day we visited here, and the house/outbuildings had no air conditioning. So we, along with the interpreters working there, were sweltering. This made it difficult to stay as long as we would have liked. There is a working kitchen here, and the cook was a wealth of information. There is also a kitchen garden, a smokehouse, a dairy and of course, the main house. One of the interpreters spent a long time explaining about the costumes and different pieces of furniture--bringing history to life.

One of the 80 plus original houses remaining intact within Colonial Williamsburg, the Powell House is more than 200 years old! A visit will bring you back in time and give you a better understanding of social status, life and work during that period for a middle class family.
