Stopped off their on my way down from The Little Big Horn. Truly worthwhile for a quick stop off. Settling the west was not easy!

A nice stop to learn about the plains war and the Bozeman Trail
sep. de 2021 • Pareja
A little known slice of history from the plains war along the Bozeman Trail. The museum and gift shop were interesting and informative. The reconstructed fort was well labeled with signs and the drive to the battlefield well marked. The memorial walk had informative signs that told the story of the battle. I especially enjoyed the wagon ruts still visible from the settlers traveling along the Bozeman Trail. An enjoyable couple of hours on our way north to Montana.

Bozeman Trail History
sep. de 2021
Protecting The Bozeman Trail was not a very easy task for those who were stationed here. Bad food, horrible living conditions and the constant fear of The Sioux and The Cheyenne made this a very hard post.

Take your time, read the information, but, especially listen to the wind as it tells the story of this very important time in our history.

Settling the Wild West wasn’t easy.

History buffs will enjoy this historical site. Nice reception center with a short video to prep yourself for the self-guided tour of the fort’s grounds. Nice placards describe the forts buildings. Take your time to walk the entire perimeter. Nice.

Nice stop with good information
sep. de 2020
Surprisingly little left from the fort despite it's history. It was only in operation for 2 years from 1866 to 1868. It was one of three forts established along the Bozeman Trail enroute to the Montana gold fields. It was the site of 2 major battles and you can drive to these sites from the Fort area. There is a partial wall of the Fort that is a recreation but walking the area they set boundary markers so you can see how big it actually was. The visitor center has some nice displays

Fantastic Historical Fort.

My Niece-in-law is the head person and moved back to Sheridan to keep this Fort going for the State. She did a beautiful job of bring this Fort back as she did so wonderful at the Territorial Park in Laramie. This Fort and the History is very important and it is fantastic to visit and learn all the History.

The real west
sep. de 2019
The fort is partially restored with the entire fort accessible to walk thru with informational plaques and a small but very nice visitor center/museum. The staff was exceptionally knowledgable and helpful. Nearby are the sites of the Fetterman Massacre and the Box Wagon Fight. This is a great place to get the feel for the Bozeman Trail/ Red Cloud War period.

Neat place, but most of the old building are gone
may. de 2019
We were expecting to see an actual old fort with building still intact but that was not the case. This area is more of a historic site of where Fort Phil Kearny was. Still an interesting site to see but wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

A glimpse of the past
sep. de 2019
Between 1866 and 1868 the Federal Government built Fort Phil Kearny to protect travellers along the Bozeman Trail to Montana, which was attracting record numbers of people seeking their fortunes in the new gold strikes found there.

The Bozeman Trail was a northern extension of the Oregon Trail, which impinged on the hunting grounds of a number of Indian tribes. So Fort Phil Kearny was constructed on a fairly massive scale, as the plans in the interpretive centre indicate. Parties were sent out daily to cut timber for the fortifications and the buildings.

The troops met fierce resistance from the American Indian tribes. The Fetterman Fight in 1866 saw the largest loss of troops prior to the Little Big Horn battle a decade later. Another engagement, the Wagon Box Fight, resulted in a stand-off, with losses on both sides.

By 1868, once the railroad had reached Montana, the Federal Government decided that manning Fort Phil Kearny was pointless, and the troops were withdrawn with the fort abandoned. What can be seen today are the vestiges of the fortifications and slightly further away commemorations of the Fetterman Fight and the Wagon Box Fight.

The surrounding countryside is stunning, but it must have been intimidating especially during winter to the troops stationed in the fort. A visit to the site is definitely worthwhile to grasp the kind of challenges facing those attempting to settle the west in the nineteenth century.

History of area is great
jul. de 2019
There really is not much to see, although the info center is fine. Lots of info on where barracks, etc. were at the time. This was the most hated fort on the Bozeman Trail and where some of the wests most famous and infamous battles took place, Fetterman and Wagon Box for two. It gives on an idea of what the west like and why the various tribes fought so hard to retain the area. Do not except anything grand, it is the idea and why of the place that is important. Also be sure to see the Portugese Phillips memorial.
