Great art centre
sep. de 2019 • Pareja
This place has fabulous aboriginal art for sale and you can see the 2 concrete Yirrala church pannels. The only problem that we had at the arts centre was that we got a long winded lecture about the problems that the aboriginal people faced in the past (which we were all aware of) from the administrator. We were all put off by this and only a few of us bought anything there. This isn't what you should be exposed to when you just go there for looking at art.

My wife and myself visited this arts centre and were blown away by the staggering amount of bark art on display for sale as well as the museum part. The staff were awesome and so were the artists there on the day. ANYONE who does not appreciate the effort that goes into this place has no idea and should stay in whatever part of the world they come from. As aussies I believe all true blues should visit to get a true idea and a handle on the effort that goes into these pieces. Most of what you see in the cities are prints or recreations which don't warrant the respect as do these pieces. Just doing the drive to it is a adventure from Darwin.. When heading out to the centre look for some of the trees that have had some of their bark stripped carefully as not to kill the tree. . Ask for Abby. Lovely lady with much info. 10/10

Worth Your Time Even If You Are Not A Art Person

When you arrived at the centre, you be brief on about the place and what it does After which you be brought round by a curator on the history lesson about certain art pieces and the tribe. If you are into a aboriginal art you want to check this place out, we were able to witness first hand while the artists were painting.

Overwhelming assemblage, but disappointed
sep. de 2018 • Pareja
My wife and had planned and saved to go to Yirrkala for several years after having seen the art and learning about the history.

There is a huge collection ranging from inexpensive near-junk to marvelous pieces which are preposterously expensive. We budgeted for one or two mid-range items but left empty handed (we did buy several items elsewhere). The better galleries in the other areas of Australia and out of the country (U.S.) have better curated collections (some of which are on consignment from the Art Centre and local artists) though not as large.

Seeing the Church panels on display was a very moving and certainly the best thing about the visit and perhaps the highlight of our trip to Australia. The museum display of items was also very nice but unfortunately not much superior to what is on display in museums elsewhere.

The sales folks were not as helpful as they might have been. We stopped by twice. The first time they were too busy with outside dealers to more than acknowledge our presence, the second time they did spend some time chatting about the regional art and what they had on offer. The exclusively white sales staff seemed a bit sleazy at best, the impression we got was that they were making more money dealing art than they could by selling drugs or human trafficking. I realize this is a very harsh criticism, but my wife and I independently left with the same impression.

Overall, we were very disappointed. We had counted on Yirrkala and the Art Centre as being someplace very special because of the Bark Petition (we are active supporters of a few indigenous rights groups), the Blue Mud Bay Decision from nearby (related in concept to my field of expertise) , and the reputation for art and traditional/ritual objects. To us, it seemed as us the Centre abrogated its responsibility to properly represent all of this to the world. For visitors from North America who planned a trip to Australia specifically to visit this gallery, we felt as if what should have been a great privilege, came close to being a waste of our time and money.

I can’t explain the disparity between our impressions and those of other reviewers. We have a large collection of art from all over the Pacific, folk art from the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and travelled extensively in remote areas and consistently had positive experiences. We enjoyed the rest of our trip to Australia and also have personal friends who are art dealers specializing in folk and indigenous art. Perhaps we just hit a bad day or sales staff who were having a bad day.

Outstanding Homeland Art

Aboriginal art which could enhance any international gallery or corporate foyer. truly magnificent. Smaller items like beads and baskets for wearing and display. Watching the artists at work is interesting. I really enjoyed my visit. Thank-you

Australia’s most elaborate art center

Yirrkala played a critical role in land rights movement. A visit to Yirrkala is a privilege to see a healthy community thriving and the art center is the heart of the community with families , elders, & kids wandering through. The facilities are beautiful and the quantity of art in view slightly overwhelming. Staff is available to explain the works in view and many artists were working within the art center or visiting while we were there. Art is available in all price ranges and they happily ship even large pieces around the globe. The center is easily visited from Darwin with daily return flights on Northern air to Nuhlunbuy and car rentals in the airport. The roads are all paved. There is also a small cafe & Store in Yirrkala plus restaurant options nearer the airport. I will return.

mar. de 2018
I was blessed to work in Yirrkala fo a short time and able see community connection through Women’s Art and Design.
Women who are connected to water and land and family and culture. Women who pass their learning onto their daughters and grand daughters.

Well worth a visit

We were greeted in a very helpful and friendly manner by Jeremy who took the trouble to provide us with a brief but informative introduction to the contents of the museum. It’s a complicated matter. The exhibits are wonderful and beautiful.
