A delight to walk round
sep. de 2021
Covering about 15 acres, Goodnestone Park Gardens are a delight to walk round and a beautiful place in which to spend a few hours. When you have finished your rambling, drinks and snacks are available at the Old Dairy Cafe where there are also some toilets. Toilets are also available in the stable block near to Goodnestone Park house. Dogs, on a lead, are allowed in cafe and in the gardens (except the Walled Garden). There have been gardens at Goodnestone Park since the early 1700s and their format has been changed a number of times over the yesrs. During the Second World War, Goodnestone Park house was used by the military and the gardens you see today date back to the restoration and expansion started in the mid-1960s by the present owners. Although the Gardens appear slightly run down, there are many areas to explore. There's the nursery, the Walled Garden, the Woodland Walk, the Woodland Garden and ancient trees, including the Lebanon Cedar dating from the time that Goodnestoe Park house was built. Round the house (which, today, is mainly used for outside functions), there are lawned terraces and a Parterre. The Parterre, with its box hedges and gravel paths, overlooks parkland. During the Second World War, the outlook from the house would have looked much different, with overgrown hedges and rows of army Nissan huts on the parkland.

A hidden treasure in the Kent countryside
sep. de 2021
I thought I knew every village in East Kent but this place is way off the beaten track! it was a gorgeous Autumn day when we visited, the flower beds and vegetable plots in the walled garden were magnificent and there's a lovely woodland walk with some absolutely massive old trees. The house itself was closed to visitors, Jane Austen was apparently a visitor on several occasions and used the place as an inspiration for Pride and Prejudice. The Old Dairy cafe was excellent, serving probably the best cheese and red onion toasty I have ever eaten!

Beautiful buildings and walled garden. Great tea rooms. Slightly neglected feel to wider garden
sep. de 2021 • Familia
We visited, having been aware of the place since seeing it open for charity with the National Gardens Scheme. The walled gardens and pond are really the highlight. The rest is really just woodland - with some temptingly named (the gravel garden, the holly walk, the wildflower meadow) but slightly underwhelming parts. It’s smaller (15 acres) than I’d imagined. I think ‘charming’ would sum it up. The house looks impressive but isn’t open to visit. You can hire the 12 bedroom place for events.

Famously Jane Austen spent time here and wrote Pride and Prejudice after a visit.

The cafe was understaffed. They had a laminated sign apologising, which suggested to me that it was a regular state of affairs. There seemed to be volunteer gardeners which also suggested the place was run on a shoestring. Food excellent by the way.

Gorgeous Goodnestone!
ago. de 2021 • Pareja
It was through chance that we ended up visiting Goodnestone - and what an amazing surprise! The entry fee is very reasonable and for the majority of our visit, you wouldn't have known anyone else was even there! Really peaceful and lots to see. The map, albeit rather simple, was a helpful aid but you can enjoy just wandering. Would recommend, and would return!

Discovering a gem...
jul. de 2021
Visited the fantastic walled garden which like the rest of the gardens is very well planted and not too formal. In my opinion one of the best in Kent. The mansion is stunning.. early 18th century and well maintained without losing its character. A beautiful parterre frames the grand entrance. The house isn't open currently but would make a fabulous setting for large parties etc.
Had a very pleasant lunch in the Old dairy which had a wide choice of lunch and home made cake options.
A most enjoyable day and the discovery of this gem with its beautiful gardens and vistas made it all the more memorable. Cant wait for my next visit.

Wedding Venue

Held our wedding at this venue. Stunning, perfect location. Beautiful house with history linking it to Jane Austen and each room is stunning. The views are some of the best I have ever seen. Perfect. House manager is fabulous. All in all this was perfection.

Needs work

The walled garden is excellent, well maintained and with an interesting selection of plants. The arboretum, gravel garden and other areas were returning to the wild when we visited. Far too many weeds and becoming overgrown.

Return visit after many years
jun. de 2021 • Pareja
This is a very well kept garden with quite a bit of seating provided as you walk around. The walled garden was looking super when we visited. The cafe isn’t open every day though the garden is at the moment. It is quite a bit off the beaten track but worth the effort to find it.

A lovey experience

Beautifully kept gardens, especially the walled garden with its pond and view of the church. Also, plenty of oppoortunity for walking on woodland paths. A pity the cafe is closed on Tuesdays as we would have loved to have stayed for lunch.

Excellent day out for family
abr. de 2021 • Familia
Excellent day out : we visited the garden on the 29th of May and although the area around the mansion was closed on that particular day there was plenty to walk and see .
This is a garden set in rural surroundings so pls don’t expect a theme park .
It is also recovering from the fact that gardeners were on furlough during the pandemic and therefore the gardens are not at their pristine state . Give allowances for that and you will have be fine day out ( we had glorious weather ) . The garden is open 10-5 and we bought tickets on site . The mansion was a favourite place of stay for author Jane Austen and may have inspired some of her books . There are smaller gardens ( walled garden and woodland garden for example) to explore .
It is not too big that you will get exhausted and not too small that you can get bored - it’s about the Goldilocks size !
We saw plenty of magnolias , alliums and euphorbias .
It has a nice restaurant- the old diary which served one of the best quiches I have ever eaten ( and I have had a few)!

Very good value day out in the heart of Kent near Canterbury.

Thank you so much! We really appreciate your response to the gardens. Our small team of gardeners is now back to full strength - busy catching up and developing new ideas to make the gardens even better.
