I have been traveling throughout Costa Rica for about 30 years. I particularly love the area around Dominical and Platanillo. There are so many waterfalls and it is always so lush. I planned a month-long vacation (Feb of 2022), and wanted to have lots of friends and family down. I considered renting a large house, but I wanted everyone to have their "own space" and privacy. Valley of Dreams (VOD) was the perfect solution.
The have four well-appointed cabins complete with mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, comfortable beds, and a living room that allows people to gather. This is supplemented with access to the ground floor of the main house. Your hosts, Annie and Matt, encourage all the guests to think of this common space as an extension of their cabin. Sort of a home away from home.
This large open common area has a FULLY equipped kitchen, a huge dining table with seating for 10-12, and a living room for just hanging out. On more than one occasion we took advantage of being able to cook for our large group. One night we made dozens of fish tacos from a Mahi Mahi we had caught that VERY day on a deep-sea fishing tour out of Quepos. The common BBQ grill was top quality and was easy to use.
The first 10 days of my stay, I had my relatives down from Indiana. My sister in-law and brother in-law had never been to this amazing part of the world so I was happy to show them all the things this area has to offer:
Nauyaca Waterfall (a bucket list kind of waterfall that is about 15 minutes away from Valley of Dreams), Poza Azul (a sweet little waterfall that is easily accessible and totally free that is about 25 minutes from VOD), Eco Chontales (a more challenging hike, but totally worth it that is at least 30-40 minutes away), and Rancho Rana Roja (a super fun set of small waterfalls along a part of the river you can easily swim in that is about 15-20 minutes from VOD).
Other things in the area you would not want to miss:
Go see Manuel Antonio National Park (about an hour away, but so amazing you have to do it), Canopy Safari zip-line tour (a great way to see the jungle from a bird's perspective), and Dominical beach (a cool little beach town at the bottom of hill that is about 20 minutes from VOD).
The last week of my month-long stay, I had a group of high school friends down that I have known for over 40 years. I got to show off all the things that made this area special. My group included friends will all different levels of endurance and activity level.. It was nice being able to match up each individual with adventures I knew they could handle.
The property is set up with LOTS of spots to just hang and chat: There is a large fire pit under a gazebo. We had a fire going a couple of nights, and it was magical. There is a space where people do yoga, and there are LOTS of hammock when you are ready to chillax. The outdoor furniture by the pool makes a great conversation pit. In other words, the property is set up in a way to encourage human interaction.
OK.. back to why Valley of Dreams was so special. Staying at VOD was the platform I was able to use to have not just the best vacation of my life, but the BEST MONTH OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. Annie and Matt have created something a little magical in the hills above Domincal. (This area is usually 10 degrees cooler than the beach, and has half the humidity.)
When I first arrived, Annie gave me the tour of the property and said in the most self-deprecating way, "It ain't perfect, but it is awesome." I think she was spot on. You immediately feel like you have come to visit friends. You do NOT feel like you have come to a stuffy hotel. You feel like you can put your feet up on the coffee table. You feel like you can let your hair down. By the time you leave, you will feel like you have made friends in Costa Rica and that you will want to come back and visit.
