My husband and I had such a wonderful 3 days at Brad's South Kona Coffee Retreat. Surrounded by avocado, banana, soursop, papaya, mango trees and pineapple plants - we ended up having a fruit detox because we really didnt miss any other food while we were here. Brad's place is unassuming, yet it has a romantic feel with an outdoor tub right in the middle of all the banana trees! There are basic options to cook - but I would strongly suggest to just explore the nearby eateries and try out local Hawaiin food. When you come back home (yes, you can truly call this home!), you can always have fruit options to fill your stomach. One of the best parts about Brad's place was the open windows (with net of course) that faces all the fruit trees right from your bed. Brad has thoughtfully elevated the bed so we can enjoy this view. You can even spot beautiful birds from the bedroom. Oh yeah! do enjoy the fresh macadamia nuts right off the garden! dont miss this place! its a treasure!

I've been vacationing here since 2016 and would NEVER considering going anywhere else. Why stay in Kona or Oahu for $200-$300 per night as they feel like any other city with emergency sirens day and night. This is what I expected from the most isolated land mass in the world to feel like. When it's 95 degrees in Kona it feels like 72 with gentle ocean breezes in this South Kona sanctuary. At $65 dollars per night I saved enough cash to pay for my plane fare! I thought I'd spend a lot of time in the retreat, the reality is that I always want to explore this magical Island. To my delight I'd come "home" to a super comfy giant bed and other little surprises arranged by the host Brad and Linda. Too numerous to mention and If I told you everything they would no longer be your surprise, right? Additionally Brad provided me with insider island "tips and secrets" about things to do and see for free avoiding the expensive tourist traps. This is the most perfect location to launch from for your daily adventures. 30 minutes to be swimming with Dolphins. 25 minutest to Kahuku Volcanos National Park area. Then another hour to the main park on the east side of island heading towards Hilo. 40 minutes to Kona. Perfect location. I could write a book on all the reasons why I never want to leave South Kona Coffee Estate & Retreat. It seem like Tripadvisor does not permit long reviews so i'll finish with random words and thoughts about things that were important to me. Free kona coffee, fruit, apple bananas, papayas, avocado, juicy red grapefruit, macadamia nuts and more, fresh towels and linens, hot shower, cute yellow tropical finches, Hawaiian hawk, Hawaiian owl, swam with spinner dolphins, humpback whales, manta ray, angel fish, octopus, reef shark (no threat) eels, yellow tang, wrasses, butterfly fish and dozens more. 30 minutes away at the Captain Cook monument is like swimming in an aquarium. Luxury camping in a rainforest setting for a 1960's price. The most exotic, inexpensive get-away ever! There are magical moments around ever bend on the Big Island. My enchanting adventures always began within the South Kona Coffee Estate and Retreat. Harry~ April 2019

We rented Dolphin cottage. Bedroom, outside kitchen (shared) and outside bathroom (private). Very cosy, in between impressive vegetation, alas no sunshine or view. But you can pick your own fruit and macadamia nuts! There are also other sized cottages with a magnificent view on the ocean. The owner has an eye for detail: lights to help you find your way in the pitch of dark, free coffee and fruit, towel changement, flowers. And he promptly replies any emails you send.

We chose to stay here, as we wanted a chill place to stay, within a budget. Brad our host, was responsive to our communications We had a comfortable bed, well equipped outdoor kitchen, free wifi and satellite tv in our room. Also lovely fresh fruit and macadamia nuts in our room. There were lots of candles around the outdoor area which created a nice ambiance. Location wise, it is a long way to Kona. Took us just under an hour to drive. There are no shops nearby, so take everything you need. Keep reading for Things to be aware of. There are no glass window, just screens. So the frogs will keep you awake, maybe take ear plugs. Our room didn’t have a bathroom attached. We thought it would be but instead we had to walk along the deck past a communal kitchen area to use the bathroom. The bathroom was for our exclusive use, but it was uncomfortable using the bathroom in the morning when other guests were using the kitchen right outside the screened window. Our room had trees growing up next to it so was a little dark. Expect to see the odd earwig, or cockroach. Even though the windows are screened, the room isn’t bug proof. Also the room is quite close to the road, so the early morning traffic was noticeable. It certainly didn’t live up to the description of “Retreat” The owners live on site and have two German Shepard dogs. A couple of times the dogs barked right outside our window early in the morning, giving us a rude awaking. Also the owners quad bike starting up nearby often added to a busy feel. It’s not the sort of place that you want to just hang out at for a day. We stayed in dolphin cottage and there wasn’t much room on the front deck to sit. Just a couple of plastic chairs which were more handy to try and dry a towel over. I noticed whale cottage which overlooks dolphin, had a nice table and chairs on their deck. We stayed for 6 nights and didn’t get a fresh towel in that time. The bath mat was changed a few times, but no other towels were changed. Because it has rained a lot more than usual over the last few months, everything had a tendency to feel damp in the room, there were also quite a few mosquitos around. An Electronic bug zapper was provided in our room, which was effective. If you are on a strict budget yes the cottage is adequate, but the website didn’t really explain the setup clearly.

We loved being in this retreat. You are completely surrounded by nature, yet you have electricity, wifi, and a full cooking set-up. If we went during coffee season it might have been more amazing, but there are so many other plants. The better room is worth the money.
