Stayed four nights at Spa at Port Royal Sound in June 2019. Unit on third floor which was nice (nobody above us). We knew that our unit had no view of the ocean/Sound, which is fine, but it’s very nice that the beach/pier is also literally just a few steps away. Beach was semi-private, also a major plus! Unit was clean and fully stocked with dishes-towels-silverware, coffee maker, etc. Our 2BR/2BTH unit’s price was significantly lower than many other similar places we’ve stayed on HHI before. Owner was very nice and we had no problems getting in, or getting in touch with our owner when we needed to. Very responsive! Now some drawbacks — First thing is that the unit is a little dated: Decor is very 1999, could use some minor updating. Actually the whole complex feels that way— straight outta 1999. The whole complex could use a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, maybe new windows, updated fixtures, etc. Again: Nothing worn. Just ... it could use a little touch of HGTV, both in the unit and in the complex. You know what I mean? Second drawback — our unit’s A/C malfunctioned two days in a row. Took a quick look at the HVAC unit and it looked 20+ years old, probably at the end of its life. Heard from neighbors that many units in the complex have a similar problem (probably all installed originally at the same time back in 1997 or something). Lastly just a note about the beach itself: It is on the Sound (not on the ocean) so although the beach is semi-private and very nice (!) for sitting out, shelling, etc., the waves are unfortunately always very small (no boogie boarding), it’s not a good beach for swimming, and in general it does not have the same feel of being on an “Atlantic” beach Folly Beach or Coligny Beach or any of the other Atlantic-side beaches. Again: We knew all that, but just writing this in case you’re wondering why this place might be much more affordable than other places, that’s probably why. Will we stay here again? We could, especially if we got a super good rate like we did last time, and/or if we hear the place gets some updating. Bottom Line: if you’re looking for good value, somewhat away from the more touristy parts of HHI, and are okay with being on a beach on the Sound instead of being directly on the ocean, and don’t mind a place that could use some TLC and even some HGTV ... this would be a place worth checking out. Three-and-a-half stars out of five.
