Terrific place to stay on a gorgeous island.
Vieques is a gorgeous spot and Barefoot Bungalow is the perfect place to stay. Bright, airy, well-appointed, and right on the beach. The patio overlooking the ocean is a great spot to watch the sunrise; walk down the beach a bit to the west to watch gorgeous sunsets. We stayed six nights and only ate out twice. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans utensil. There's also a BBQ but buy your own charcoal. The local grocery stores has adequate supplies (including terrific octopus), you can buy fresh fish on the dock in Isabel II and there's a fruit/vegetable market a couple of days a week at junction of 200 and 201. Despite warnings about the beach out front, it is a great spot for an early-morning swim, though water shoes are recommended cuz there are a few rocks. The pool is clean and long enough to do (short) laps. There is air conditioning but we did not use it at night -- just opened the windows and fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves. The mosquitos were fairly intense, partly because of heavy rain just before our arrival -- probably smart to bring lots of repellent and coils, just in case. A car is required to get around. Our favourites beaches were Caracas (Red) and Sun Bay, but there are lots more to explore. We snorkelled at Red Beach and Mosquito Pier -- lots of fish and coral, but watch out for jellyfish at the pier. Beach chairs and umbrellas are supplied at the house. The bioluminescent bay is a must-see - we went in glass-bottom kayaks with Jakwater Sports. The owners, Michael and Gail, clearly care about their place and their guests, and were very helpful. Highly recommended.

It is so rewarding to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay at Barefoot Bungalow. We try hard to provide the best vacation experience we can. Thanks again.

Bugfilled Bungalow
My husband and I stayed in the bungalow over our honeymoon weekend and absolutely had a great time exploring island and the beaches, but not the best time staying at the bungalow. Aurelio was very attentive to us. He picked us at the ferry and brought us the bungalow, called a taxi for us the first night and even came by the house when we locked ourselves out. We did not get the same service with the owners. My husband and I signed a contract to rent the bungalow months before our stay and we were invoiced through Paypal half of the total stay. Due to the owners lack of details, the contract said the second half of the payment would be due in October and that we would get a $200 deposit back. My husband and I did think that was strange, since we were planning to be at the bungalow in September, but didn't question the owners about the contract since we don't know them or how they do business. Either way, we were prepared to pay the second half of the payment. On the second night of our stay, the phone in the bungalow rings and it is one of the owners. He tells us that he forgot to send us the second invoice and that we should pay that right away. My husband had been emailing back and forth with the owners so I wasn't on the same page and wasn't aware that we didn't pay yet. We checked with the contract and we were confused since it said we didn't have to pay until October. We also did not have working WIFI in our bungalow which also hindered us to pay the second half of the payment. We were also very bothered that the owners would call us during our honeymoon and bother us about a payment that they forgot to invoice us. Thus making their problem our problem. We did find a way to pay them over our stay just so they would stop bothering us, but their lack of details and terrible service made our stay uncomfortable. Not only did we receive poor service from the owners, the state of the bungalow wasn't very clean. There was ANTS everywhere! They advertise the bungalow as a place where you can cook, but cook at your own discretion and if you get squeamish or freaked out by ants and other critters...DO NOT STAY HERE. We saw and killed many cockroaches and also a little lizard inside the bungalow. We left our suitcases always zipped up on the couch because we didn't want to get ants or any other type of bug inside our luggage and also the closets and dressers weren't clean. There was dust and specs all over the drawers in the dressers and the closets had dirt and dust on the doors as well as the inside. Some of the kitchen items needed to be replaced because of over usage or dirtiness.... i.e. cutting boards, coffee maker. Most of the sheets and towels were stained... the list goes on. But the thing is, these things are an easy fix and I think the owners are letting this place go and it used to be nice. We chose to stay here because the reviews are great, but we did not have a similar experience as passed guests. I think that the owners forgot we were staying and it was cleaned hours prior to our arrival, and that is why we did not have an enjoyable experience. The backyard, the pool and the beach access was terrific. Vieques is a very special island and we loved exploring it. It was wonderful to wake up to the sound of the ocean everyday, even if it was in an unclean, bug infested bungalow owned by owners with customer service. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. *TIPS - you need a Jeep to get around the island. If you go during an off season, multiple restaurants will be closed.

We send a lease and an invoice to all of our guests. It is our policy to put the terms and conditions clearly stated on the lease. In this case, we made an error on the date when the balance was due. It stated the balance was due October 21st, 30 days after the renters returned from Vieques.not the correct date of August 31st which was 30 days before the renters arrival in Vieques. We also sent an invoice from Paypal. The invoice clearly stated the balance was due August 21st, one month before the guests arrived. "Will reserve when deposit is received. Balance, along with a $200 refundable security deposit due 1 month prior to arrival." The renters chose to ignore the correct date on the invoice, but chose instead to use the incorrect date on the lease, although it didn't make sense, which they noted on their review. When we realized our mistake and called the renters, at the cottage, to collect the balance of the rent, I was taken aback at how hostile the husband was. I couldn't understand his anger, because all of our previous conversations were cordial. In fact we had given them a honeymoon discount. He was angry that we called while he was on his honeymoon. My husband and I had assumed he would want to take care of the invoice as soon as he realized a mistake had been made. We try very hard to maintain great relationships with our guests. Prior to this call, they had not contacted us, or the property manager, with any complaints. When our property manager went over to unlock the door, as they had locked their keys inside, he offered to fix anything he could to make their vacation more enjoyable. They did not want him to do anything, and the husband even apologized to him for their complaining. He said he was upset because we called him while he was on his honeymoon. After the husband apologized to our property manager, we thought the problem was handled, and did not give it another thought. We understood that it was our mistake and we would live with the consequences. The bungalow is not a luxury hotel. Although we pay for quality linens, occasionally they get stained. When that comes to the attention of the housekeeper, she puts them aside for us to see. We update the linens and towels at least twice a year and discard stained ones. We pay for weekly cleaning along with a deep cleaning every month. The house is exterminated regularly for pests, but it is a bungalow on the ocean. Even with the high quality windows we have installed, the wind off the beach brings in sand, salt, and dust daily. Lizards and ants trying to escape the heat occasionally slip in. We vacation there ourselves.and love being in the bungalow. Many, many guests have commented here, as well as other sites, about how much they enjoy the bungalow, and that it has everything they needed for a great vacation! Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do to make these guests happy after contacting them about our error. We hadn't even charged the regular $200 security deposit, but they asked to be sent a $200 refund for a deposit they hadn't made, after they arrived home.

Practically in the water this little cottage made the ideal Island vacation spot.. However, if you don't rent a Jeep be warned, the last block to the house is one of the worst roads on the Island, but even that had it's charm. When you do get to the bungalow the first thing your hear is the sea lapping against the beach just steps from the yard! There is fencing around the yard which is ideal. Otherwise you would have a yard full of horse poop, stray dogs and who knows what else. It gives you a sense of security and privacy. You can enjoy the breezes while lying on the hammock or sitting on the raised concrete patio. There is also a nice elevated table and chairs on the patio to eat or enjoy drinks while the sun sets. The view is lovely. In the nice sized yard, there are 2 white picnic tables. So plenty of seating. We enjoyed watching the little hermit crabs making their way around the yard. Getting in and out of the driveway is a challenge. Only someone confident in his/her ability to drive in tight corners should attempt it, but it can be done. We got pretty good at it:) The bungalow is 5 minutes from the little town of Isabella and about 15-18 minutes from Esperanza, the other "main" town on the island. It's also close to the airport, supermarket, and car rental. I have to admit, we didn't even use the pool, but it was very clean with 6 lounge chairs. They were at least 8 beach chairs, 2 large coolers, 2 boogie boards, some snorkeling equipment (we brought ours so I don't know how it works) and other beach amenities. The cottage was small but workable for the 4 of us. The photos online make the home appear larger and a bit more " Martha Vineyard" than it actually looks. It looks like a nice cottage on a small non-resort type Island. The 2 bathrooms are decent sized with LOTS of towels. Oh and there is a washer & dryer outside if you need to use them. I did use the dryer, after Aurelio fixed it, and was happy to have it. Although we did find a clothesline in the house, tied it to 2 of the big coconut palms and this worked fine for us. The beds were comfy and we all slept well. Honestly though, after many hours of swimming, snorkeling and beachcombing daily, I think we could have slept on rocks!! I was impressed with how great the TV worked and how many channels we got. There were a few minor issues but each were solved quickly with very attentive responses from Michael, the owner and Aurelio, the caretaker. If you want a 5-star resort type cottage, you will be disappointed. If you want a simple, quaint, seaside bungalow with the ideal location and many beach amenities, you will be very happy here! We were:)

Perfect Little Beach House Getaway
Easy to work with owners and property manager! Met at the airport, taken to get our rental car, quick stop at store, then to the house. You must rent a jeep! Perfect size for our family of 4. 2 adults, 2 kids, ages 11 & 13. Fun beach to explore, boogie board, watch the horses go by, and find sea glass and other treasures. Bring beach shoes if you have them. Our family loved Blue beach but all of them are worth a visit! Of course you must see the Bio Bay. Otherwise, enjoy all of the great restaurants around the island, go to the market on market days if you want veggies. And, get a smoothie at the place across from the ferry dock! They are awesome! We enjoyed the pool at the end of each day and just the overall relaxed feel of the place. Everything you need is there. My only request if we were to rent again is a new A/C unit in the front (Master) bedroom.

PERFECT secluded location on excellent Sea Glass beach
Our family of 4 adults had a wonderful stay in March. The weather was perfect and so was the house's location. We really enjoyed the oceanfront location and the wonderful views from the raised patio. On a clear day you can see Puerto Rico and Culebra in the distance. The property manager was very easy to work with! We were met @ the Vieques airport and given a little tour (restaurants/grocery store/gas station) of the island on our route to the house. When we arrived we found a "welcome basket" of goodies waiting for us! The house everything (beach chairs/cooler/ maps) we needed to make our stay comfortable. We were even able to borrow a car (for a fee). While in Vieques we visited several beaches but the beach on front of the house is was by far the BEST sea glass hunting ground. The pool was a nice feature and so refreshing. Our family can not wait to return! *tips* Taverna has the best pizza in town. Al's Mar Azul has the best sunset location and a great bar. Green Beach is best for snorkeling (wear bug repellant). The clear see-thru canoes are the best way to see the BioBay (Vieques adventure company) and you can enjoy a wonderful day of sailing on the Avalon w/ Capt John Gentile @ 939 332 5778.

Amazing Location!
We rented this bungalow on the ocean the second week in December. We loved being right on the beach and having a pool. We felt like we were visiting a friend’s cozy beach house. They left lots of good information for us. We have so many good things to say about this rental. The open living and dining room were very attractive—two sofas for sprawling and reading—and views of the water. We loved going to sleep hearing both the surf and the singing of the coqui (Puerto Rican Tree Frogs) and waking up in the master bedroom's comfortable bed and seeing the waves and the palm trees in the wind. I meditated at the raised outdoor table every morning and enjoyed hummingbirds up close and pelicans in the distance over the water. We were so happy to swim in the pool, sit in the chaise lounges and see the flowering bushes surrounding the pool. We walked the beach each morning.. Because of the December winds and rough seas, we could not snorkel or swim here, but we drove often to Caracas (Red) Beach and loved swimming in the warm aqua water, sitting on the white sand and enjoying the whole scene. And we appreciated the ease of getting there. (A car is needed). This was our third visit to Vieques, and the first renting a house, and we found it much, much more fun to rent a house. We went out for dinners (and there are excellent restaurants) and ate lunch and breakfast in the house. The kitchen was well-stocked with pots and pans, plates, etc. We recommend that you rent either a jeep or a SUV not only to visit outlying beaches but also to navigate the dirt road to the house. We were met at the airport, taken to the car rental agency and brought to the house. The house was great for a couple, and would be good for a family, or two families with a total of 2 children.

Beautiful!
The location was perfect. Walk out the door to the beach which was great for snorkling and walking. After spending the day at the many beaches or sights, swimming in the pool was a nice end to the day. Bungalow was stocked with everything we needed. It was an amazing family vacation for our family of 5.

quiet cottage on the beach
Pick up at the airport and an informative tour of the shops and restaurants got us off to a great start on Vieques. The house is off the beaten path and a bit scary on first sight because of the abandoned house next door. Once we pulled into the parking area and walked around to the front it was, beachy and comfortable. The house was right on the atlantic and we watched sunset right in front on the beach . It is a 15 minute ride to all the fabulous caribbean beaches across the island. That was easy on 997. The house has everything you could need for the beach, rafts, coolers, lounges toys etc.. We really didnt use the pool but it was pretty. If you are expecting a fancy house, this is not for you. It was ikea fabulous and shabby chic. The house had everything we needed ,blender, coffee maker, washer and dryer, and all the fixings for the beach. We felt very comfortable and at home.

Paradise
For the first time in 23 years we returned to the same vacation spot for a second stay. The second stay was even better. The new patio was a wonderful spot to sit and watch the horse go down the beach, watch the pelicans, and the ocean. The house is clean and equiped with everything you need for your stay. Plenty of bath and beach towels along with beach chairs. Town is close enough to walk but renting a jeep is a must for visiting the other beaches (the beach at the house is great) you don't want to miss Black Beach or going to the Bio Bay we suggest the Vieques adventure Company. The clear kayaks make it even more awesome. Chef Waldo is excellent and the patio is a great place for dinner. This will not be our last stay on this wonderful Island and bungalow.

Perfection
This was our second visit to Vieques, but our first time in this house. We will never stay anywhere else. This house is absolutely amazing! It's roomy and cozy, and it's literally right on the beach. I loved going to sleep and then waking up to the sounds of the ocean (and dogs barking) ?. For me, it's perfection. There were four adults for this trip, and we all loved it. We loved the spacious backyard (where we ate fresh coconut from the trees in the backyard), the pool, the various amenities, everything! For the price, this place cannot be beat. As far as the island, well I can hardly begin to describe it. It's paradise. But if you're looking for resort style living, Vieques is not the place. It's raw and non-commercial, but that's what we love about it. The beaches are beautiful and nearly empty, the snorkeling is awesome, the food is great, and the island vibe is strong. The roads need some work, but driving on them was fun and adventurous. Make sure you rent a Jeep or something. Some of the roads to the beaches are, uh, challenging. Overall, it's a place you just have to discover and explore on your own.
