We had an excellent trip to Sugar Island to Joe’s lovely cabin that he built himself! It is such a wonderful space and gave us a nice area to spread out and relax as a family. The house had plenty of space for us to all have our own bed, which is awesome for our family of five. Even the Murphy bed was incredibly comfortable. We had tons of room to sit and relax in the family room and plenty of chairs for our group to sit and eat meals together as well. The kitchen had everything we were looking for and even had things like an ice cream scoop, an apple corer, and plastic children’s cups. He even had a step stool in the bathroom that was the perfect height for our two year old. We realized that we had forgotten one when we were on the way and were thrilled that there was one there at the house. There were even things there that we had packed not knowing if we would need them or not that we wouldn’t have needed to! There were plenty of towels and lots of extra bedding and pillows if we needed them. The views were amazing and we loved watching the sunset each night. Joe was incredibly kind and generous and accommodating and each interaction we had with him was positive. He was easily reachable for any issues and was in contact with us to remind us about things like the garbage pick up. Our kids loved watching the freighters, splashing around in the water, and taking some spins on the boats. We enjoyed a lovely campfire with hot dogs and s’mores as well until the pesky mayflies swarmed in, but nothing you can do about that! We enjoyed visiting the surrounding area and seeing the Soo Locks, the Tahquamenon Falls, and some of the light houses. We visited some of the few shops on the island as well and were met with very kind and gracious people everywhere we went. The convenience store had everything we were looking for. We enjoyed the lovely owners at the Hilltop Bar, and most of all, the adorable Nest Keepers gift shop that is only a few doors down. The owner of Nest Keepers was so sweet and the shop is adorable! You must walk over there and check it out. We got some unique souvenirs from there, including a Sugar Island Christmas ornament so we can always remember our visit. She lists her hours on her Facebook page. I had never heard of Sugar Island until I happened upon this listing on VRBO, and I’m so glad that we got to experience it! Thank you, Joe, for your wonderful hospitality! Book this place, you won’t regret it!
